The Sig 220

Back in the late 80's when I was interested in getting into Law Enforcement, the Sig 220 was very popular with several local PD's in my area. Shoot, even Steven Segal had one in "Above the Law".

I've owned a few over the years, but always seemed to let them go to fund "the next gun". Reacquiring one has been on my short list, but I really wanted an older 80's or 90's gun (no rail & folded slide).

I saw this at a local shop on Saturday. Luckily it was still there today when I went back to buy it. I'm not sure when it was made, but I'm thinking around 2000 based on my research? Came with 1 factory 7 round mag and these Hogue smooth grips. At just under $500, I couldn't pass it up (the grips alone sell for $75-$100). Hopefully I'll hold onto this one.

Nice find! I would say it's earlier than 2000.
As for the exact age, look at the chin of the slide under the muzzle, just ahead of the dust cover, and there will be a 2 letter code, like KA, JK, etc.
The sequence for the first letter goes, K=1990s, J= 1980s, etc.
The sequence for the second letter goes:
A=0
B=1
C=2
D=3
E=4
F=5
etc.
SO a KB code would indicate a 1991 date of manufacture, JK=1989, etc.

Oh bummer! That complicates things. Then your estimate is likely correct.
Whenever it was made it will be a great shooter.
The only thing I don't like about my 220 Carry is that it costs me $50 in ammo every time I shoot it, and the .22 upper isn't as much fun!

I don't believe the gun is old enough to have a folded slide. The roll mark on left side says "Made in Germany" which most likely makes it later production. The older ones are stamped W. Germany. I also see no evidence of a breech block. Also, most (not all) had a flat spur hammer. Still a great pistol.

The price was reasonable IMHO. Had several P220 variations since the early '90s. I traded or sold them off along the way to acquire the latest had-to-have shiny object,etc. Only have one now, a 9MM, but I'm going to try to hang on to it

I love my p220 scorpion elite. It is a wonderful pistol to shoot. I tend to forget it's a 45 acp. As it's a soft shooter. Glad you got a great deal on the p220 they are great pistols

anymore, as after that there was only one Germany...
But of course this does not mean,
that already produced & stamped parts were thrown away

I can't see any German proofmarks in the pics. That would help, to date the pistol

I've had several p-220's. Never could shoot them worth a darn and sold both of them. I have a few other Sigs but those are 9mm's. Those combat sights have always been a problem for me so I just look at them and wish I could shoot them. I don't seem to have any issues with 1911's or target sights.

I have a 1996 P220 .45acp made in Germany. Mine also has the smooth Hogue grips just like yours. I like it!
If I should ever decide to give up my 1911s and go DA/SA, the P220 will be what I'm carrying.

It is not post date code it was assembled in the US so it does not require full German proof marks and date codes. The Serial number puts it in the 1999-2000 range. It is all German parts assembled here in the US. This was pretty common at that time.

If there's no proofing or date coding under the muzzle, it wasn't assembled in Germany. Many were assembled in the USA using all German parts.

Congratulations on your purchasing the P220. Yours is a fine example. I have often thought of selling mine but just can't bring myself to. Plus mine's a KA date code which is 1992 the year my son was born.

All German, trip serial number, original box with test target from factory.

I've also had the P220 SAS and a Carry Elite Dark. All outstanding in their service and craftsmanship, 0 problems.

IIRC 2010 or so was the change over. By 2010 folded slides were getting hard to find.

And here it is at 5-7 yards. 100% reliable with 50 rounds of 230 ball and a few Federal HST. I was surprised at the accuracy, as I don't usually shoot that well.

That's a great looking pistol!

I passed on a W German P220 a while back. It was a bit worn, but had a great feel in the hand, and is "one of the one's that got away". One day I'll cross another one, and it'll come home with me.
