The Soda Jerk & the Secretary
By Matthew George
September 16, 1951

Robert Smith a soda Jerk at his home town pharmacy is on his way to work, when he is stopped by a red light. Once the red light turned green Robert resumed his drive to work.

When he got to the pharmacy he parked his car a 1936 ford The care that he bought when he turned 16 with his own hard saved money, shut down the engine, removed his keys from the car's ignition then he got out of the vehicle and went into the pharmacy.

Once he was in the pharmacy building he clocked in and put on his apron once his apron was on he finished getting ready for the work day. When he got back from his lunch break business picked up and Robert was very busy.

four hours before his shift was going to end Robert's dear Friend Marie an office secretary with long brunette hair and beautiful brown eyes came into the pharmacy and sat down at her usual stool.

Robert went over to where she was sitting and he said to her "Marie how can I help you?" Marie looked at Robert and she said "Robert I will have my usual "A Coke with lots of ice". Robert quickly and efficiently prepared Maries soda for her.

Once the soda and the ice was in the glass Robert put a straw in the soda glass and he presented it to Marie then he said "Here you go Marie A coke with lots of ice enjoy". Marie thanked Robert then she enjoyed a few sips of her soda and quietly read through her bible, while Robert served some other customers that came into the pharmacy.

When the other customers had been served Robert returned to Marie and he began to speak. "Marie you and I have been friends kindergarten we have been through a lot of things together some good, some bad, some ugly, and some just plain awful and I was wondering would you like to go to the movies on Friday night"?

For several tense minutes Marie thought about what Robert had asked her. Then she replies "Robert I would love to go to the movies with you Friday night". When Friday night rolled around Robert drove home from work quickly but carefully.

when he got home he got out of his car ran into his home removed his work clothes, then he got into the shower and he showered thoroughly he also shaved as well.

After showering and shaving Robert put on a small amount of pleasant smelling after shave. After cleaning up the bathroom Robert put his dirty work clothes in the laundry room making sure to remove his keys from his uniform shirt. Then he put on his date clothes, locked up his house, got into his car, and he drove to Marie's house.

When Robert got to Marie's house he got out of his car and he walked confidently to her from door. When he got to her from door he knocked politely and waited for Marie to come out of her house.

10 minutes later Marie walked out of her front door wearing a bright orange dress with matching orange shoes. Her brunette hair tied behind her head in a neat and lovely manner.
When Robert saw how beautiful Marie looked he nervously blurted out l "MARIE YOU LOOK BEAUTIFUL!"

When Robert realized how loudly he had complimented his date he quickly apologized for talking to so loudly. Marie smiled sweetly and accepted his apology. Then they young couple walked off of Marie's porch and to Robert's car. When they got to his car they got into it put on their seatbelts and Robert drove to the movie theatre.

When they got to the theatre Robert found a place to park and he parked the car. Once the car was parked they got out of it walked into the theatre. Robert bought the movie tickets and then they walked into the theatre where there movie was going to play and they watched it. Two hours later they got out of their movie seats and walked into the Movie theatre lobby.

When they got into lobby it began to storm heavily so the young couple found a place to sit and wait out the storm. While they waited for the storm to stop they talked Marie cleared her throat then she looked at Robert and she said to him.

"Robert you're a very intelligent man when you returned from the war you could have used the GI Bill to go to college and earn a degree but instead you went back to your old soda jerk job.

Robert looked at Marie and he said to her.

"Marie as you know during the depression jobs were few and far between, when MR. Brown offered me the soda jerk job I took it so that I could help bring in money to help my family, we were hurting very badly. When the war came in 1941 I wanted very badly to enlist but I knew if I did that I would hurt MR. Brown's feelings"

"so a few days before I went to the Army recruitment office to enlist I talked to him and promised him that if I survived the war I would come back to my old soda jerk job, and I also keep my promises."

Marie looked at Robert and she said to him "Robert that was very noble of you you're a good man a very good man" then she hugged him.

Once the storm had subsided the young couple got back into Robert's car and he drove Marie home. Over the next two years Robert and Marie dated and gradually they fell in love,

then one day in the summer of 1953 Robert was in the pharmacy break room eating his lunch when he had an epiphany and he realized that he better ask Marie to marry him or he risked losing her to another man.

But Robert was hesitant to ask Marie for her hand after all Marie is a beautiful kind intelligent young woman who could have any man that she wanted.

So Robert decided to take a chance, he went to the bank and withdrew a portion of his savings, once the money was in his hand he drove to the jewelry store to search for an engagement ring for Marie.

The young soda jerk and Word War II Army veteran searched the entire store for a suitable ring for his beloved Marie.

Robert searched and he searched each and every Jewelry in the entire store but none of the rings looked good enough for his beloved Marie.

Until finally Robert spots a plain gold ring with a huge single diamond on it in the back of the store's primary jewelry case.

Robert gave the ring a brief inspection then he paid for it, put it in his shirt pocket, and drove to Marie's house. When he got to her home he got out of his vehicle and walked to her front door.

When he got to her front door he knocked politely and he waited for her to open it and allow him to come inside her house. After waiting for several nerve racking minutes of waiting Marie opened the door and let Robert inside.

After some short and sweet small talk the young couple sat down at Marie's kitchen table. Robert was so nervous that he thought he was going to wet his pants, he swallowed hard and then he began to speak.

"Marie you and I have been dating for quite a while now and during that time I have fallen in love with you all heart and soul. Now I have a very important question that I want to ask you. Marie will you marry me?"

Marie looked at the engagement ring that Robert was holding in his hand, then she looked at Robert. For a full 5 minutes she looked at the ring then she looked at Robert until finally Marie gave Robert her answer.

"Robert Smith my answer is yes I will marry you".
Then she slipped the ring on her left ring finger and kissed Robert.

The End

EPILOGUE: After a short amount of planning and preparation they got married and they went there honeymoon in Marie's home state of Mississippi when they returned from their brief honeymoon Robert returned to his job at the pharmacy and Marie returned to her secretary job.

A year after they got married they welcomed their first and unfortunately their only child a son also named Robert.

Just like his father before him Robert Smith Junior went into the Army but thankfully his army service was during peace time not wartime. Shortly after their 70th wedding anniversary Marie passed away. Her husband Robert and their son visited her grave every week until her husband's death 10 years later.

That's a story you could hear a thousand times and never get tired of it.

I'm a little unclear on the point of the whole exercise, as well. One thing that immediately stood out to me was the notion that "Robert's" 1936 Ford would have had seat belts! Even in 1951, the notion of someone having installed such equipment...on a soda-jerks wages, into his 15 year old car, strikes me as highly unlikely. Even more unlikely...that they would have actually used them!

But did Robert like broccoli or not?

Did Marie give him a problem when we started him reloading room in the biggest bedroom? That is the true measure of a happy marriage , that and the size of his gun safe. :D:D:D

I am looking forward to the next book in the series. Maybe we'll learn about his first Reg Mag?

Edit: This is an unsolicited review and the fact that I work at Shooters magazine is purely a coincidence.

Good story, I remember many stories of romances like that told by my parents generation. That's how it use to be done.

Same comment on seat belts. They didn't come into common use until the late 60's or early 70's.

Confused but honored to be in the bibliography, I think?

I can see now that I should have become a soda jerk. I sure never managed to accumulate a collection of firearms like that as an LEO and Rancher.:D:rolleyes:

I thought the story was beautiful. Isn't that what counts?

Keep them coming Matt.

BTW Robert had a bad wound from the war and The Purple Heart to show for it. Like many of our heros of the time he just wanted to get on with his life. True story. ;)
