The sotomayor hearings

Obama and his posse have been doing a good job of getting around the Constitution without any help. The real disaster is she'll be on the court long after BO is gone.....if he goes.

This was in my e-mail from The White House.

As President, there are few responsibilities more serious or consequential than the naming of a Supreme Court Justice, so I want to take this opportunity to tell you about the qualifications and character that informed my decision to nominate Judge Sotomayor.

Judge Sotomayor's brilliant legal mind is complemented by the practical lessons that can only be learned by applying the law to real world situations.

In the coming days, the hearings will cover an incredible body of work from a judge who has more experience on the federal bench than any incoming Supreme Court Justice in the last 100 years. Judge Sotomayor's professional background spans our judicial system — from her time as a big-city prosecutor and a corporate litigator, to her work as a federal trial judge on the U.S. District Court, and an appellate judge on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

And then there is Judge Sotomayor's incredible personal story. She grew up in a housing project in the South Bronx — her parents coming to New York from Puerto Rico during the Second World War. At the age of nine, she lost her father, and her mother worked six days a week just to put food on the table. It takes a certain resilience and determination to rise up out of such circumstances, focus, work hard and achieve the American dream.

This character shined through in yesterday's opening statement: Watch the video.

In Judge Sotomayor, our nation will have a Justice who will never forget her humble beginnings, will always apply the rule of law, and will be a protector of the Constitution that made her American dream and the dreams of millions of others possible. As she said so clearly yesterday, Judge Sotomayor's decisions on the bench "have been made not to serve the interests of any one litigant, but always to serve the larger interest of impartial justice."

In anticipation of today's first round of questioning, I hope you'll share this email widely, because Judge Sotomayor's confirmation is something that affects every American. It's important for these hearings to be about Judge Sotomayor's own record and her capacity for the job — not any political back and forth that some in Washington may use to distract you. What members of the Judiciary Committee, and the American people, will see today is a sharp and fearless jurist who does not let powerful interests bully her into breaking from the rule of law.

Thank you,
Barack Obama

I got the same email as Barb. Yes, that makes me feel much better! If it were not for missing out on something, I'd unsubscribe, but, it's best to gather all the intelligence (I use that term loosely) we can.

I know this is not directly about the 2nd Amenent, but what part of the constitution is he getting around?

Lets see, taking over private companies, car manufacturers, banks. Where in the consititution does the government have the power to give money to private companies?
Then fire and hire excs. for those companies?
What part of the consititution authorizes national healthcare? How about making treaties with other countries without senate approval? Is that enough for now? I may get sick and ruin my keyboard if I go on.

How about:

Amendment 16 - Status of Income Tax Clarified. 2/3/1913.The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.

Barb, this is taking money not giving it away, or running private enterprises. Am I missing something?
Sotomayor said she has friends that hunt. Isn't that nice? I guess we don't need to worry about her then. No wonder Chuck Shumer D(ummy) NY is so excited about her, we all know what a great 2nd supporter he is! When does this nightmare end?

What cracks me up is the big deal about being from the projects in the Bronx. This nurse grew up in those same housing projects. The thing that scares the crap out of me is that discrimination is just that and being a "Latina" you would figure that she would have the guts to do something about it, but when THE VICTIMS ARE WHITE she all of a sudden forgets her "life experience" and says NO NO NO cause if you fix it the Black firefighters would have to work HARDER to move up because THEY FAILED THE EXAM.I never forget that I came from Edenwald Projects and it helps me to be a better person because it reminds me that POOR DOES HAVE A COLOR and that you only move up thru hard work and perseverence.....God Bless......Mike
Who thinks she wont be confirmed? Just a show and gives the politicans a crack at publicity. The thing that I dont like is her statements, (rumored to be at least 7 different occasions) that her being latino gives her better insight on "judgeing". Now, just what and how should anyones race influnance your decision on interpiting consitutional law? That fact alone is scary to me!

Well, I thought it meant that we couldn't be taxed disproportionately, such as wealthier people being hit with higher taxes, and then given away disproportionately.

Never mind. :p

None of that is unprecedented, nor is it unconsitutional, even if it is bad policy. Franklin Roosevelt took over Montgomery Ward in 1944, carrying the CEO out of the building in his swivel chair.
WHat treaties has Obama made that are effective without Senate consent?

Where is that in that constitution? If it's not unconsitutional then the power granted to the government will be in there, what section is that again? Last week he said he expanded the START treaty with the rooskies to cut our nukes. He didn't say word one about Senate approval so taking him at his "word" it's a done deal. The treaty was approved in its original form, changing it should require approval, if not than anything can be added to any treaty without Senate approval at any time. In that case why not add the UN weapons ban for civilians to a treaty we have with the UN already? Is that what you want?

Presidents and governments have governed outside the strict limits of the constitution almost since the beginning. And that includes the men who wrote it. Where in the constitution does it say the gov can acquire property? I guess that means the Louisiana Purchase wasn't valid either.
Simply because Obama didnt mention Senate approval doesn't mean he doesn't need it. I wouldn't make much of this.
