The Surveillance Society is full on in Spain

In June of this year I spent a week in the hospital because of some issues with my heart.

Ever since then every time I go online I get pop up ads that start with "Tom (my given name) has known heart disease and takes ozympic". (I don't have heart disease.) If you think they're not already surveilling you.....

Talk about info wanted, check in to a hotel in Europe!

The Immigration (Hotel Records) Order 1972 states "all hotels, must keep a record of the full name and nationality of guests over 16 years of age." In addition, visitors must also list the number and place of issue of their passport, their nationality, and their next destination, just as they would have to while traveling through Customs.

Back in the bad old days, I was expected to leave my passport at the desk of overnight lodgings in Germany (then West Germany), Austria, Italy, Switzerland, and France - so they could report to the local police. I'm sure the car rental companies were doing the same things. Nothing much has changed in fifty years. The process is just more automated. ;) Here in the US, I am always required to specify my home address, vehicle state of registration and plate number. Pretty ordinary stuff, whether we like it or not. Surveillance is everywhere. There is no way to avoid it.

I am in Europe, specifically the Uk, now. Wife and I have been here for over a week so far and, except for immigration upon our arrival , have not had to or been required to show our passports anywhere. We were in Greece and Italy earlier this year and the same was true there. We show our driver's license when we rent a car, naturally and occasionally are asked for ID when using a CC. A driver license works for those. I have no issue with any of this ……their country, their rules. Spain is, however, something else to which I can not comment. However, we talk about surveillance on this forum often enough that I'm surprised that you all are surprised. Surveillance is everywhere, it's the modern world.
