I am at my sister's and her oldest (27 and still living at home) was sitting next to me at dinner tonight. Noticed some red "ink" on his arm and asked if he had gotten a tattoo. Answer was "YES" and the SHTF. Seems he had gotten it about six months ago and my sister had never seen it. I wish I could have recorded the sound and fury that has followed but it was similar to what Charley describes encountering daily. Thought the sister was going to stroke out when the younger nephew said he had four.. He was just kidding.

All is quiet for now but there are two more days to go in this festive weekend.

Aren't holidays with the family interesting?

Ha I remember when my Mom first saw mine, she tried to rub it off because she thought it was fake. Then she said it's nice. She is a great mom.

Once they're on there, they're on there for good so there's no sense freaking out over them. I got my first one almost 30 years ago when I was in the service, I've gotten several more in the years since.

When my son was 18 and wanted one I tried to talk him out of it but here was no swaying him so I took him to a shop I knew and trusted to get it. That was over 4 years ago and since he's been in the military he's added a half sleeve on his right arm, including a copy of my first one. I've also added a couple since then, including one from his original art. He's a heck of an artist, when he has time I need to have him work on some more flash for me.

Like I said, they're really not that big a deal, as long as the work is good and all of the words are spelled correctly.;) My mother got over them long ago and my ex-wife was never really bothered by Zach's, she was accustomed to tattoos by the time he got his.

Of course, if your nephew had used his money to move out of Mom's house and THEN got a tattoo I'll bet your sister wouldn't have flipped quite so badly.:D

My ex-wife was an ER nurse and when she first saw my tattoos, she rolled her eyes and remarked;

"Well, I suppose if you are ever dismembered in a car accident, they'll not have a problem identifying your body."

And I miss only her sense of humor! :D

**** stirrer!

When your laying on that cold slab and the undertaker is getting you ready, do you suppose he uses a sharpie and adds a few lines to the ones that nobody see's? I bet they get a few chuckles now and then.

In 1969, one week out of high school, age 17 and a half, my father (a Navy Master Chief), drove me to the Greyhound Bus Station in downtown San Diego to catch the bus to the LA Induction center and then on to Fort Ord for basic training. I was expecting something of a serious father son moment as we parted. He looked at me and said: "Please don't get a tattoo, get out of the car", I complied with both requests. To this day I have no tattoo's or piercings but must note that on my dad's 70th birthday he went out and had is left ear pierced. The grandkids all thought that was pretty cool...I'm still a little confused. (o;

Let's see...

20 years in the Navy

Riding bikes all my life, Harleys since 1980

No tatoos...:(

First thing I thought, too.

Got my first one at age 15, since then have added 36 more. Yea, I ride a Harley. My wife has a tiny one on her ankle. I tell people that the ink is a souvenir, it's the pain that I enjoy. :D

Heck, that just makes you a rebel these days, seems like almost everybody has something on them. You stand out if you don't!

Was it the tattoo she freaked over or that a 27 year old living at home spent money on a tat instead of saving it for rent so he could move out?

I've been riding HDs since 1966 and have zero tats.
Last couple of years I almost feel like putting on a 3 piece suit to go riding.
Heck - They dress like me to go for a put.

27 and living at mom's? That's Just WRONG.
The BOY shouldn't have got any ink till he grew up. Mom should take a switch to him and straighten him up a bit.
What we down here call an attitude adjustment :)

Hmmm , 27 and still living with Mom?

There's more problems there than getting some ink.

You have that right but this scenario could be right out of one of Charlies stories so I left it at that.

The other problems would eat up so much bandwidth that I would be banned and would not resolve the underlying issues. :(

I know a young woman, she's a school teacher, that went through laser tattoo removal...only to get a new tattoo of a dog's paw print. She volunteers for a no-kill dog shelter and does foster care for dogs that are waiting for a new owner. She tries to find good homes for them.

To each his (or her) own.....:)

How do you tell someone thier tattoo looks horrendous? My nieces husband got a full upper chest tattoo, it's like an anatomically correct view inside the upper chest. Heart complete with aorta, lungs, all the interconnecting veins, etc. Like something you might see in medical school, or the posters in the doctors office you look at while waiting for the Doc to see you.

He must have paid a fortune for it, and believe me, they can't afford it, three kids, etc.

Nothing against tattoos, have two myself, I have seen quite a few that I thought looked neat, were tastefully done, but this one is horrendous! Scares kids at the beach...

My sister in law is 36... and has never moved out of her parents house.
I think she has ha2-3 boyfriends... but doesnt really socialize because she is worried what her parents will think.
When she IS seeing someone, she does her best to make sure the parents dont know.
She has worked at a large retail store for around 16 years.
She is afraid to move out, and her mother coddles her and encourages her to stay.
Then they both feel the need to give my wife parenting advice.
They look down on my wife because she has a couple of tattoos that are only seen if she wants to show them.
They also insist on buying things for us because they were on sale or cheap.
Not that we need then, have mentioned that we want them, or... if they are clothes... if they even fit or are a style we would wear.
Then bring up that they buy things for her.

When my wife brings her son, who is a special needs child, up to visit... they both try to over ride her standing rules or any order she gives to him.

Some times you just need to write family off.
Before I moved out of my parents house, almost anything they said went.
Their house=their rules... for the most part.
If someone is going to snap about something minor, like a tattoo... and there were no issues about how they spend their money, then its time to have some time and distance brought into the situation.
Sometimes people need to evaluate what is important.
If me having a tattoo is more important than seeing me regularly, then I really dont need to see them.
And I honestly dont care who they are.

I agree 100% with your evaluation.

If ya try to please everyone , no one will like it.

If having , or not having a tattoo ( dyed hair , short hair , long hair , no hair , earrings or piercings, etc) is the major stumbling block to , or defining factor of a relationship , well then , , , , !

The way of the world..."Look like me, think like me, we'll all get along just fine".

The wife and I both have tats, and paid for each of our three kids to get their first one when they turned 18. Rather have them get one in a licensed shop than from someone who's learning and gives them a 'deal'...

I have a Japanese body suit, done by some of the finest artists in the country. I work in the educational field. I ride a Harley. I collect S&Ws. I am a home-owner and I pay taxes. I have never had a single incident on the wrong side of the law. I have no time for people who choose to judge me based on the color of my skin.

When my son was 13, he wanted to get an ear pierced, I told him he wasn't going to mutilate himself on my watch; when he turned 18 he was free to do what he wanted. When he was 17 he came home with a tat of a feline cartoon character on his shoulder, one that was entirely appropriate for him. I started laughing when I saw it.

"I thought that's how you would react," he said. "You know you never told me not to do it. And at least I didn't get my ***** pierced."

"But a tat is something that could become an identifying characteristic on your rap sheet."

"I don't plan on ever having a rap sheet."

"You never know who could be in charge 20 or 30 years from now."

When I was that age we had long hair, listened to rock 'n roll, and did all kinds of other things that drove our parents up the walls; at least we wished they would. We didn't leave much room for our kids to shock us with clothing and haircuts, so I guess we pushed them to tattoos and piercings. He has a few more fairly tasteful tattoos (although he says he's getting tired of them) but he's never yet poked holes in his body.

Now he's a parent. I'll be curious to see how this issue plays out with my grandson

No tattoos for me - I'm a non-conformist.

My oldest boy has a couple, along with a pierced lip. He's a great kid and it doesn't bother me a bit.

My nephew has "Your Name" tattooed on his hairy backside in the hopes he could win bar bets. I don't think he's had the guts to try it yet.

I don't have any tattoos and wont be getting any. That is my personal choice.

If others choose to get them; that is their choice. You wont hear me say a word negative about it. I have plenty to do running my own life.

I have yet to have anyone try to force a tattoo on me. I find it troubling when those with tattoos are berated on the net or otherwise. It makes it look like us au natural skin folks are actually not as good as our tattooed brethren. They are brethren you know, and not aliens from outer space.
