When we are looking for something else...

I have been hunting a nice pre model 27 3.5 inch to fill out my N-frame collection for well over a month with NO luck. The money I was holding for it started burning a hole in my pocket. I usually make the rounds of six to eight shops a week, but I had taken a couple weeks off due to other commitments. I knew I would be knocking off work at noon Friday, so I started on my "route" after meeting a friend for lunch.

There it sat behind the counter of the third pawn shop. I asked the owner what he had stuck back in the blue box. "Ah Burney it's just a 66. Nothing to get excited about. Ain't even pinned or recessed. Bought it this morning and haven't logged it in yet - welcome to look anyway.''

Took everything I had not to look excited when I opened the box flap...

I might have made a mistake buying this instead, but it has been on my list for years. I am 100% sure the pre 27 I want will turn up now! Didn't find a thing at the other shops so I'm happy.

All indications lead me to believe it is still unfired. Wearing the wrong grips, but that will be corrected soon.

So what have you guys liberated from the gunshop looking for other Smiths?

A couple weeks back, I made my 'rounds' after returning from an out of state trip, just to say hello. I had told myself I was done buying guns for the year. Still have a couple of rifles to develop loads for, a couple of Contender barrels to get threaded, etc, etc.

Walked out of the first shop with a 4" 1st year Highway Patrolman.

:D:D:D

Burney,

No worries putting the pre-27 off for a bit in exchange for THAT 66 :D

Which iteration is it? I'm guessing it is a 66-2, but I could be wrong. The -2 version came with magnas, and the later versions mostly came with rubber.

I have managed to track down all 4 of the pre-lock 3" 66 versions -2, -3, -4, and the ever elusive 3.25" -5

It takes a while, but you will find your prize sir, stay focused ;)

My white whale is a Super K model 66....never seen one in person, just photos on the internet.....one day, maybe

Scott you are 100% correct - model 66-2 with the AFK prefix.

I caught your post a week or so back with your model 66 3 inchers lined up, and it was a factor in making me jump on this one. :)

I have a customer from when I had my FFL/SOT with a Super K. Did his transfer and have dibs on it should he ever decide to sell, but I seriously doubt that will come to pass. I've been casually asking for over a decade now. Prince of all the 66 revolvers and my favorite K frame too.

At the risk of being accused of outright gloating I'll admit to laying out a very high three figure sum for this beauty. :D

You did fine...,most around here are bring 12-1500 easy with no box or any go-withs.

Earlier this year I checked the website of a gun store I was going to sale a couple of shotguns. They had a 38 special model 60. I well you know first come first serve. So by the time I was able to get into the store I had missed it by a couple of hours.
They did have an engraved model 640-1 that was brand new. I checked it out in the store and really liked it. Bought it on the spot. Yes it cost quite a bit more than an old 60 does, but it’s the nicest factory revolver I’ve bought.

pawnshop

Years ago a friend called and said there was a highway patrolman in a local pawn shop, $450. I drove over and talked them down to $350 and walked out with a 3 1/2 inch Registered Magnum. Mfd 1939, Shipped to the Houston bank branch in San Antonio. The bank president ordered 2 exactly alike. So! there is one more floating around Central Texas.

austintexas I think that's the best story yet and not to be topped!

The prospect of a score like that keeps me motivated to make the rounds.

Hope one day I will have a similar experience.

Yes this is like walking onto a Used car dealership and finding a Tucker on the lot for $1500

Congrats on running down that 3" 66. What a beauty!

I always try to be open minded when I go to any gun shop. Some of my very best finds have been guns that I did not know that I was looking for. My latest such find is a 4" 686-4 seven-shooter that happened to be in the counter when I went to pick up an engraved S&W that I had shipped to the gun shop. Here she is...
