To get enough room for hubby on the last flight, we got a seating option from American Airlines called Pemium Economy. Felt like flying the way it used to be, with more seat width and leg room, along with some other perks. Nothing like that advertisement, but good enough.

Flew to Johannesburg four times on safari and business. Coach was $2400. First class about $12,000. I can be a little cramped for 14 hours for ten grand.

I heard what may have been no more than a rumor, but might be true, and in either event a terrific idea: Back in the mid 1990s, after my part of the company got sold to someone else, I heard that my former employer, which authorized business class for overseas flights of six(?) hours or more, was offering to split the savings with employees who flew economy.

Round trip business class from Tokyo to NYC was maybe about $4K then, with economy maybe $1K. I would have taken that deal.

Same here. I could fly to Cincinnati in about 2 hours. I drive it in about 12 1/2 hours.

I was fortunate enough to fly round trip Business Class on Etihad from NY (JFk) to Melbourne, Australia 3 years ago. It was definitely like first class on many other airlines.
