The 'unofficial' 58 Club

I had a 58 when I was in college and the ammo was my biggest gripe.

Always wished S&W made a RB version in .44 Mag; perfect utility gun with hot .44 Specials!

Didn't the PC make a fixed sight round butt 629 3 or 3.5" gun? I had a friend who had one about 10 years ago.... Bought a Thunder Ranch Special .44 Special and wasn't happy with the bullet expansion so he bought the 629...was ported or compensator.... And for that matter if one is only going to shoot .44 Special then the Thunder Ranch is a clone to the 58 but has a round butt and slim brrel...

Went and picked up a 58 this morning serial number S3127**. As I posted on different forums. Gun has PC grips that number to this gun but, a few issues with blueing(nothing big or I can't handle). I'd call blueing 99% and for a handgun made in 1968 or 1969(I do not own a standard catalog third edition) I'll take it! Looked for a grip adapter to run it out to one of the ranges I belong to but, darn hard to find anything when you're looking for it anymore? No box or docs but, I've been looking far too long for one of these. It's he** to get old.
Ha it worked!

Making an old dream come true

Well, I waited and waited, then found what I thought was a grail gun. Only, it wasn't a grail gun as such, but it was close. That stoked my fire just enough to commit a cardinal sin against my dearly loved, and well used model 58.

As some of you know and have seen the photos, last year I bought a 58 with a cut-down shrouded barrel that the seller claimed was a 41 Mag. The pictures screamed Behlert, but I haven't lettered it yet, and a letter may not reveal the gunsmith anyhow. I was sad when I discovered that it was terribly inaccurate due to the fact that it was a 44 magnum, and not a 41.

No worries though....I quickly came to the conclusion that it was loads more fun (and more accurate) with 44 Special loads.

But, I still have been lusting after a 41 Jovino or Behlert, and not unlike many folks here, I have dreamed that Doc44 would one day sell, trade, or give me (hey, I could get lucky one day ;) ) his 29-58.

Enough time had passed, and a 4" model 57 barrel found it's way into my parts bin, and with some help from a forum friend and all-around fine gentlemen David Kieth, I now have a 3.25" 41 Magnum barrel. To top it off, Doc44 was kind enough to send me a CD of hi-res photos of his 29-58 so that I could forge a copy in 41 Mag.

With the barrel cut, crown, and front sight handled, I packaged up my blued 58 and sent it to Ford's down in Florida for the remaining treatment, including their high polish blue that pretty closely matches Smith & Wesson's work of a bygone era. In a few months, I hope to see a dream realized.

Here is the base for the project - A first year model 58 with numbers matching stocks.

Here she is in the 'most often carried' configuration. This 58 rode around the ranch with to deal with feral hogs, porcupines, and poachers. I know a lot of folks don't like the factory combat grips, but they fit my hands just right.

And here is the barrel stash- The top blued barrel has been chopped, the center barrel went to a nefarious gun and leather crafter for one of his projects, and the 6" nickel 44 mag barrel is still waiting for a purpose.

In about 4-5 months, I hope to have in my hands a real dream. Many thanks to all the enablers and friends that helped me along the way.

And don't worry - I am absolutely NOT going to harm a single hair on the 1st year nickel 58 that is a brother to the blued 58. It shall remain intact throughout my possession.

Thanks again guys, and keep those 58's coming!

Very nice SAF...I take it since you like the factory Combats you are not going to have the frame round butted....

I picked up a 520 barrel with the thoughts of doing basically the same thing... Shorten the tapered barrel to the end of the uderlug and then round butt the frame....the whole gun would then be hard chrome plated.

Only problem may be the base gun...a 1964 58 that has already been parkerized. I would need to check with Ford's to see if they can get that off without polishing out all the lettering or can they just HC over it...

SB...nice find on that 58.....

Bob,

Since I am essentially 'cloning' Doc44's 29-58, it will be round butt. I do love the combat stocks and they are going straight over to a 4" 657 that I recently stumbled across. If I really want the combat stocks on this new edition, I have some N frame round butt combat stocks in the stash :D

You guys getting some cooler weather up that way? It was 96 here at 5pm. I just couldn't drag myself back out into the heat for even a short range session. I can't wait for the first real 'cool snap' that usually comes around Halloween.

I will pass along any progress photos that I get from Ford's, and some glamour shots when she is done.

Weather has been cool and wet here for several weeks. Was out shooting yesterday and it was 70 and cloudy...perfect for shooting.

I need to contact Fords about refinishing the parkerized 58...

I've had some problems with Ford's in the past(work not completed, parts missing), once bitten twice shy? My experiences, not knocking them.

I heard more good reviews than bad. I am in Florida several times a year for work, so if there was any problem, it could be handled mano-a-mano ;)

I am an easy going kind of guy. I sent written instructions to them, along with a CD full of high quality photos of the gun that we are re-creating. The only 'loose' part will be the original barrel.

Fingers crossed - I can only sit, wait, and think happy Model 58 thoughts. Who knows? maybe the positive energy will go south to FL for the winter :)

Add me to the club. Mine isn't a collector piece, it's a reblue and had a target hammer and trigger installed. No box and no original grips. It's an S prefix that dates to 69-70. Even though it has no value outside of a shooter it's still a very nice piece.

It came with pachmyers on it. Took them off and put on some S&W logo Hogue's.

Happy to say I too can now play in the Model 58 thread! Found mine on Gunbroker with a not very good description and some just OK pictures. But it was pinned and looked like it had the PC Magnas on it. Delivered for $800 I feel like a hero! More so when I found it in was a 258xxx serial # and the Magnas were numbered to the gun. It's beat up enough it will be my new Jeep gun. Looking forward to shooting it tomorrow.

Nice guns guys... Is this your first guns in .41?

Last week I almost bought what looked like a mid-1960s that had been reblued on GB... It had N-frame Square Butt Combats on it and only sold for in the $600s....once it hit $600 I stopped bidding.... The grips alone were worth $200-250...

Welcome Matt & Mike!

With a little bit of wear and tear, it is easier to take it out and about. My 58's have always been near laser beam accurate with 210gr (my loads & factory stuff). I really enjoy range time with them as they make me look like a pro ;)

Thanks for sharing some photos, and be sure post your range trip results. :)

This isn't my first .41 but I am new to the caliber. A few months ago I picked up a 657-5 with an unfluted cylinder and 7.5" full underlug barrel. I see a lot of potential with these .41s.

I don't have access to a book now, did the 58 get phased out before they started deleting the pinned barrel and recessed chambers? In other words was there a 58-3?

"In 1977 when I was in the police academy one of the presentations I made was on speed loaders."

When I went through the police academy in 1979, it was loops or drop boxes. Speed loaders weren't allowed. No semi-autos either. My duty gun was a 6 1/2" M27 .44 Special conversion. However, I took a 4" M19 that I had round butted to the academy. I could have used my .44, but the PD gave me 500 rounds of .38 special. .44s I would have had to buy myself.

Not long after I graduated from the academy, I went out and bought .44 speed loaders and pouches. :)

This is my 6th .41. I have a first year 6" with its Cokes, a first year 4" with its Cokes, a Late no dash 57 blued 8 3/8 and 4" Nickel no dash 57.

I like .41. I will say, that 58 with it's Magnas and reduced weight smacks the hand pretty good... I shot 50 rounds today. 18 in the 58 from about 12 yards and 32 from the 8 3/8 from 25 yards.

That Long Tom sure helps tame the recoil for sure. I really like the sights on the 58 a lot more than I thought I was going to.

The original run of 58s ended in the mid-1970s so they all were P&R.

S&W brought back the 58 in their "Classic" series as the 58-1 that was not P&R and has the IL.....
