The 'unofficial' 58 Club

So congrats are in order! Very nice way to join the club Scott.

Give us your impressions, since you just couldn't wait to take it out and shoot it...:D

Well, I'm in the club. After a long search I finally took delivery of my Model 58 today. This one is an S prefix which dates to late '64/early '65. It was purchased from a fellow board member. The Tyler T also came from a another gentleman here.

The picture is poor, but the revolver needs cleaning. I had just returned from the range when I took the photo.

Congratulations! It looks great clean or dirty!

I definitely prefer the target grips on my 57. Overall I'm extremely pleased. The first thing I noticed is how well it balances in the hand. I like the fixed sights much more than I thought I would. I'm very impressed with the accuracy of this revolver. Very. My 57 and Redhawk both do very well with my cast 210 gr. SWC over 15.3 gr. of 2400, so that is what I had on hand to shoot. The 58 may like the load more than the other two. This one will be a regular at the range. For $700 I'm super happy with it.

It will also be making its debut at court later this week.

I toted it this evening. It rides just right in the holster I had Ryan Grizzle make for my 57.

After 36 years fron the last one I had, I traded for this one today! It is in much better shape than my last one. This one has it's box and papers and the tag from the shop that sold it! Seller said it was 95% but it is like 99%. So please accept this one for club membership.

Looks like new to me!

Are those the grips it came with?

No on the hammer and trigger. I believe the previous owner add the target grips and the box lable is marked "S" in the stock section.

If this was an "S" - I would be smiling for a month!

Scott...that is a real nice looking holster!!! And just as nice a 58. It is great there are some agencies that still let officers carry big bore revolvers...

Ray...nice gun...those Winchester 210 HPs...Winchester stopped making them a long time ago...

howdy Franzas , can you please post a serial number range for your SFPD model 58 ??
many thanks, robbt

Sorry, I don't have one. Don't worry it's on my list.

I was commenting on the fact that I go to Green Top literally 3 times a week.

I called S&W and was asking about the #41895 in the Special Features box on the label. The customer rep said it would be something that is not on the revolver as it is normally issued. He said a list of things, trigger - hammer - grips magna's...no target and he said that might be it then. But he had no way to look it up. Roy might, but that would run me $50.00 and I do not need to know that bad. Others have mentioned the grips also.:D

This is one I had but it is headed to a new home. It is one of the San Antonio PD issue guns. It came with mismatched magnas but I bolted on the smooth target grips for the new owner.

New grips and ammo report

So two new things to add on my model 58.

I ordered some magna grips from Eagle Grips. They came today, and I must say they feel good and fit very well. We'll see how they feel on my next range visit. I think the smooth wood looks nice.

I also got around to shooting the CorBon 250 gr. hard cast rounds that are rated at 1325 ft/p. I don't have a chronograph, but I'll give my impressions on how they 'feel'.

The Remington 210 gr. JSP's are by far the hardest kicking, LOUDEST, brightest flashing factory ammo I've tried. The last range visit, the people in the next booth over commented on how they felt the concussion through the booth wall. They are a lot of fun, and very expensive. I was honestly expecting the CorBon 250 gr. rounds to kick every bit as much, and I was very surprised when the recoil was soft, the muzzle flash was low, and the noise was very mild. I shot 5 rounds of this stuff, and they were all consistently mild to shoot. They were noticeably milder than the Speer 210 Deep Curl rounds I carry in the M58 for daily carry.

This leaves me puzzled. If CorBon were not such a highly reputable company (Massad Ayoob stands by them), I would have thought I was duped. My only guess is that CorBon is using some proprietary powder that can achieve high velocities at lower pressures, and with less flash.

If this the CorBon slug is doing at least 1200 ft/s at 250 grains, then I'm sure the rounds are very hard hitting on the other end.

That Remington JSP was one of the causes of the downfall of the 58 as a PD gun.. Nobody could get anything but that, which is a hunting load and a good one.
It was too much for PD use and the 58 soon fell into disfavor with many LEOs.

The LGS guy gave me a box of that ammo when I bought my gun.. On a cop's salary, I couldn't afford to pay $81.00 for the gun and ammo too.

I fired that box and went to reloading. I have never fired another factory round in the gun since 1967.

I used some pretty warmish loads, but they weren't as nasty as those Remington JSPs.
