Mystery solved. Seems that Amazon recently started to deny access via VPNs as much as possible.
I'm in Japan for a bit, and use VPNs while here to access US streaming services rather than their Japanese versions as programming overlaps but is different. When I arrived a couple of weeks ago I noticed that I could no longer access Amazon Prime US as has been my custom.

Won't bother me. Due to their gross incompetence, I am done with Amazon. Ordered a radio last week. They sent the wrong one. Took it back and asked for them to send the correct one. They sent the wrong one again. Tried to make a complaint. Dealt with a "chat" for two hours and they cut off the chat and transferred me to another person, who could not help. Asked for a call back. Got someone who could not speak English. Finally asked for a supervisor. The supervisor was no help and said that the people in "fulfillment" who screwed up my order, twice, did not talk to customers. I asked for her supervisor and she said she was as high as I can go.

With customer service like that, I don't need Amazon.

I am nearly always on a VPN and have had no issues. The odd website doesn't like VPNs but was just on Amazon US - logged in via a server in Santa Clara CA apparently - and no problem.??

OBH's post reminded me that if one switches VPN server locations, sites which reject a VPN might accept a VPN from a different site. I switched US VPN locations and can access Amazon Prime streaming again.
