I didn't make that name up, his old lawn mower trailer used to have that painted on the side.

He's now officially the most overqualified landscaper in the Dallas Fort Worth area, as he's just gotten his civil engineering degree from the University of Texas at Arlington. Mowed our lawn this morning.

Not an ideal time to graduate.

I have no idea how he is as a civil engineer, but I know he's great at mowing lawns - shows up like clockwork, does a good job every time, confesses when his mower throws a rock through your car window, stuff like that.

I put him in contact with someone I knew casually who needed a civil engineer, and he worked for him for 2 years. Got laid off when the company came apart due to the collapse of the shale gas business around here.

So anybody know about any good jobs for starting civil engineers around here?

He told me he likes designing landscapes. He was doing the plans for what they would plant on the well sites after the drilling was done.

I shook his hand to congratulate him, and now I have to add landscaper to the list of strong hand professions. The other two on the list are carpenters and NFL defensive lineman

The young man who recently upgraded our septic system's leech field, graduated with honors from Purdue's Civil Engineering program.

Tough times.

Everytime I go to training of some kind with my company, there will be some personality there who will seem to set some theme that everyone just has to utter in every other sentence. First time around, it was the idea of referring to Godley TX as "Godley America". The last time around, I had to hear so much about "The Barnett Shale", that I was positive I was gonna' stroke out before week's end. I would imagine that's the shale gas you're talking about.

That drop in shale gas up there has put an awful lot of folks in a real hurt-locker. That is a really big-money way to get to natural gas. You know how it goes - millions a day and lots of folks and equipment. It's hard to believe it's worth it, but people smarter than me say that it is.

Did you have a well drilled in your yard while they were rockin' and rollin' up there? If not, I don't know that you'll get another chance anytime soon.

Good luck to the yard guy.

If he's already got experience in the oil field, have him check into the companies working North Dakota. Things have slowed down a bit up here but with the price of crude inching back up things should be picking up again.

Still,
I'd feel ever so much more comfortable with "Grass Technician".

A kid that works that well and that hard will find a job. He has the key ingredient, he's willing too WORK and is not fussy about the kind of work. Even in these times a person like that will find the job he wants, just takes time. Nothing worth having and keeping comes easy.
