This one came in for AFR (americanfightingrevolver.com) which my son and his partner run. I got to handle it. After they do a media write up I may get a chance to adopt it. Or put it in shop inventory.

Looks like they are trickling out of the factory now.

Yep, Wednesday morning was when they appear to have officially released, and started showing on Gunbroker, and in stores that had pre-ordered. When I called Lipsey's a couple days ago (who all the guns are going through), they said every 686MG they'd received so far was already allocated, but the guns are being made on a continuous basis, not in batches, at least for now. Mine shipped yesterday from a store that had already gotten one in stock.

I checked AFR's website last night and was surprised to see they didn't already have the article up yet on the 686MG, since Darryl Bolke announced they would be writing one a couple months ago around the same time as SHOT show.

They have been waiting on this gun to do their article. Lipseys takes pretty good care of Bryan and DB. And me to a certain degree. My partner and I do all of AFRs transfers so often we get to handle hard to come by items early. Lipseys is a great operation and about the only distributor I use anymore.

If this is a sign of future S&W production, I think it's heading the right direction. Function is high priority but I'll admit my "collecting brain" does get hung up on aesthetics. I'm glad to see a step back from the blackened hammer, triggers and screws. It's nice to see flash chromed again (if not colored case). I'm guessing it has an internal ball-lock on yoke as the normal front lock is absent.
Maybe they'll make the rollmarks a little smaller some day. ;)

Correct. It uses the same ball detent as on the 66-8 2.75" and the new Model 19-9 and 19-10, not the ball detent on the 66 4". With the ball detent lockup, the 7-shot cylinder, and the reinforced forcing cone, they are saying it is the strongest 686 model (or L-frame in general) they have ever made.

I agree. A smaller font for a more discreet caliber designation would appeal to me

Other than that gripe I like the looks. I'm definitely in the market for one.

I know it's a completely subjective thing, but one of the things I love about the new Mountain Guns is the black, bold chambering markings on the barrel. I think it looks really sharp, and much more appealing than the standard non-black markings. That said, for me it will be a moot point, since you won't be able to see them, if my plans come together. Mwuahaha (evil laugh)

So the MG has essentially reverted back to the prelock version just after the pinned hammer version. A step in the right direction. Hopefully, they discontinue all lock models and revert back to the traditional rear frame contour. I wish they’d go back as far as the pinned frame lug, but I know that’s a bridge too far. :)

Here's one from the first run. It came with that UGLY, DIRT CHEAP lazer etching..........Which HAS ALL WORN OFF.........NO markings on the gun what so ever.
I thought the Lipsey’s run should have the more traditional red ramp, but I see sights are replaceable with the roll pin. I like your front sight! But, did you get the sight from S&W or did you make it or have it made?

This gun has been through the ringer. It appears someone intentionally even removed the rollmarks.
