I have the basic E-series full size 1911 and could not be happier with it. I got it several months ago for less than $900.

Don't count out the used market. I found an early S&W "billboard" model that blows away any other production class 1911 I've tried. I've owned a Colt, Kimber, Rock Island Armory, and shot a few others. I now own two S&W 1911 models. The billboard model as mentioned, and the Pro Series 3 incher.

Have you owned a 1911 before? If not, I would start with an all-steel, 5-inch gun in .45-caliber. As others have said, there are a lot of nice guns in that price range. I would probably pick an S&W but you couldn't go wrong with a Colt if you think you might sell. Everyone seems to think Colts hold their value.
If you are a target shooter, adjustable sights are nice. Maybe something like this?

I have several 1911's including a Wilson CQB and a Baer PII and the STI
Spartan which cost $600 delivered isn't that far behind them in overall performance. It is the best value I've seen in a 1911.

Ruger and Remington recently started making 1911's. They are both well put together, priced under $1,000 and worth looking into.

If I were limited to one 1911 it would be a new Colt Series 70. I have other Colts and a couple of Kimbers and they are all nice but that 70 is special.
There are so many quality makes out now the choices are many.
Myself, I prefer a colt series 70, 1911 because I like to modify them to my liking. With that said, Springfield, Kimber, Smith and wesson, or Ruger all make quality 1911 models, just depends what you personally like.

Myself, I prefer a colt series 70, 1911 because I like to modify them to my liking. With that said, Springfield, Kimber, Smith and wesson, or Ruger all make quality 1911 models, just depends what you personally like.

i recently purchased the colt,full size rail gun (100 years of service) top notch gun in every way and...colt has made a LOT of them through the years

I was debating between Springfield and S&W when I was looking for a 1911 a couple years ago, and found a S&W target model that I couldn't pass up. If I were looking now, I would be strongly considering the Ruger.

The Ruger is well made, and well rated. You should be able to get one for around $700. It is pretty darn good looking too

While I have no time behind SW 1911 style
I do own quite a few that get shot from Colt, Springer, STI and several of them are custom jobbers.
I carry a 1911 on duty and rely on a custom springer.....however out of the box.....I dont think you can go wrong with a recent manufacture Dan Wesson.
I purchased a DW CCO for plain clothes driving a desk police work and from a standpoint of fit, finish, trigger break, accuracy, and overall value....what you are getting is a tight tolerance piece that already has all the upgrades you are going to want to day anyway. the CCO has an alloy frame and I carry it in a pancake holster and it does not get weighty for all day carry.
save a little more and get something better than mid end.
Years ago, I bought a Les Baer Hvy Monolith.....that gun was so tight....oily fingers would slip off racking the slide.....however that gun ran 100% and accuracy for the base 3" model was just plain silly.
while I know your budget it 1g, I think you should save a little more and look at semi customs and DW is the best right now for out of the box. If I had the money to throw on one, DW Valor would be my choice.

Mike does have a point. If you can throw a little more money into the project the next level up has some really super guns. I am prejudiced in favor of Les Baer's Premier II model. I have had several over the years and have been pleased with them.
The myth that accurate 1911s don't run well is just that. I have put a lot of rounds through several PIIs and the only thing I can say about them in that regard is that they ought to be kept clean. Even so, I know I have run in excess of 500-rounds of my cast bullet target loads through my old gun without thorough cleaning. These are pretty dirty stuff, because I prefer to use the old NRA formula lube, which really makes a mess. Never a problem with any of the PIIs.
If you plan to use the gun under really harsh conditions, I would prefer a standard gun like the S&W 1911 mentioned earlier, but for the type of shooting 99.9% of us do, a finely fitted 1911 is no handicap and is a great aid at the range.

Just spent 6 months looking and researching 1911's, bought a S&W Stainless 1911 (108282) for $929.- in CA.. Colt 1A model at $899.- was nowhere near the quality, the Sig TTT at $850.- was my second choice followed by the Kimber Stainless Target II at $999.-. If you live in America you of course have more to choose from than i did. I love mine, and good luck.

Everyone has an opinion. My Colt Gold Cup NM got me out of a speeding ticket once. That was nice.

Not as bad as Browning, but pretty terrible. They are overpriced for what you're getting. Like Kimber - there's $250 in the name - and I have seen pretty poor Kimbers lately (compared to 10 years ago) as well.
I have several Colts, the "newest" one being an M1991A, built in 1997. It's a series 80 and shoots poorly at best. The rest of them pre-date that one, and are flawless tack-driving machines that make my heart go pitter-patter.
My suggestion would be to either get a "no frills" standard mil-spec blue or parkerized 1911(American made if that's important to you), or a Ruger SR1911. The Ruger is stainless, has all the fancy bells & whistles, and is $750 (if you can find one). Ruger's customer service is also the best in the industry, bar none.

I just bought my first 1911, but I got one in 9mm due to having some ammo around and keeping my guns the same caliber. Kimber Pro Aegis II and it will alternate with my 9c for carry. i love it. i love it so much the next day i boight a sig 1911 .22 Kimber America | Pro Aegis II
