To my tired old eyes, those look like pre 1920 N frame stocks. Those are pretty valuable all by themselves.
I missed those. Glanced at the gold and just thought "wrong grips".
So, they do offset the too high price somewhat. My advice was given based on:
I don't want that gun. Many people won't want that gun when it's time to sell it. Among the ones who will want it, I daresay most won't pay 650. It's a $500 gun on a good day. It won't appreciate much, if any.

So, if you spend $850 or more and get a nicer gun, you'll love it more and you can probably sell it in the near future for what you paid, plus it will appreciate in the long term. ;)

This is a scruffy gun. Scruffy guns do only one thing well---they continue to depreciate. Spiffy guns, on the other hand continue to appreciate.

A case on point are the two .22 Outdoorsman from my collection which was recently liquidated. One of them (with a King Cockeyed Hammer) fetched $2500-----the other $1750. Both these were spiffy guns. I have no clue what I might have paid for them, but can pretty much guarantee it was a whole lot less than what they sold for.

It would be a great rough around gun for $300 Parts are worth that. Curious how the bore looks.

I bought a rough one for $300 and its goes to camp with me every trip! Bluing all scratched from improper cleaning but the bore is like new.

It could be fun to shorten the bbl to 4 inch for a pre pre model 18:D

Well I don't always listen to advice, but it's always appreciated. Here it is after a bit of work. I had a set of K frame grips to replace the very nice set of N frame grips that were on it. Bore is in great shape timing, lockup, ect are all excellent shoots like a dream....

Nice job on the "cleanup"
What did you do to improve the finish on the barrel so much?
Cold blue? Boil & card it?
I use a product called Blue Wonder I clean the metal per instructions repeating the process if needed I then heated the barrel to about 200 degrees then apply the bluing solution repeat as needed to get the color blending I want. I then apply the activator and
let sit for several hours then oil. The finish on the
frame, and cylinder was in very good shape so not
much needed there. I have used this product before with very good results it looks, and wears like hot bluing.

Nice clean up, I'm surprised that it came out so well. The gun was a shooter grade condition and it shoots well so you did great. The bonus was the N frame grips that now you'll have to find a good condidate for.
Or sell them so that you'll only be into this gun for $350-$400.
You sure didn't go wrong buying this gun, despite advice to the contrary.

Glad you got it.
Glad you will be shooting it.

I have an 18 that was a safe queen.
One day I said "Heck with it. I'm shooting it."
It was a good decision. Haven't looked back.
Why shouldn't I have the privilege of shooting a fine gun?

Sounds like a good product. I may have to get some and give it a try. THANKS!
FWIW, I bought one through an auction a little over a year ago that could be it's twin. It didn't include a nice set of N-frame grips, but it did include the original numbered grips, though they were just in so-so condition.
IRRC the hammer price was around $500, but with shipping, FFL, taxes, and fees it came out to around the same price as yours.
I've debated whether to leave it in it's patinaed condition or try to clean it up. Seeing the results of the Blue Wonder here and in videos, I'm leaning more towards clean up now.
