Thinking of buying an M&P 10

Hey everyone. I'm new here and need some help. Within the next two months I'm looking at buying a new M&P 10. Just wondering what everyone thinks about putting a red dot vs a powered scope on it. I may occasionally use it for 100 to 200 yard shots. Sometimes longer. I was looking at the Leupold Mark 4 HAMR with the DeltaPoint on top. For now (since I can't afford the Leupold combo if I buy the gun) I will probably buy a cheap red dot just to use to get more familiar with the gun. Thanks for any input.

Firstly do not use this for home defense, buy a .223/5.56 if that is what you are looking to do. The .308 round would go through your wall then your neighbors wall as those rounds can go upwards of 1000 meters and through cinder block like butter. That being said, great for the range had her easily up to 200 yards using some 7.62x51, and I can't wait to hog hunting with her!

No problem at all, might I suggest slickguns.com and gunbroker.com as they both have great deals. I got my M&P 10 for 1075.00, locally they wanted 1500.00... So you can save a great deal buying online. My bushnell Bushnell 6-18x50 Banner Dusk & Dawn w/ Multi-X 716185 B&H

106.00 will put you out to 500 yards if you have good sight.

Red dot - just save your money and get either an eotech, and or an aimpoint, the cheaper red dots will die rather quickly on a .308's kick in my opinion. If you want some fun time cheaper at the range just remember, s&w makes a reasonably priced ar15, as does dpms, and a few others - if you do not already have one. That is what I started with, and moved my way on up from there!

I have am M&P10 with a leupold VX-R 2-7x33. I bought just for going hog hunting. As soon as it quits snowing every few days I plan on getting into the woods. Here piggy, piggy, piggy.

The idea of having a scope and the red dot together entertains me lol. Anyone else have a set up like that?

Buy the best optics you can afford. If you are worried the scope will fail at some point, put it on a QD mount and have a flip up rear sight.
As far as home defense goes, get a pump shotgun.

Sure. I'm not opposed to open sights. But that's not what I want. I already have a shotgun with 3" double. Just expanding my options.

Personally I like Eotech on my AR's. The 512 on my M&P 15 and the 552 XR308 on the M&P 10. In my case though, I have hunting rifles with quality scopes for long range work. So the Eotechs serve their purpose well. The 7.62 setup also has a 3X slide to side multiplier which seems to fit my needs. Good luck!

Just my humble opinion but I would stick with a standard AR-15 platform rifle for your first rifle of this type. The AR-10 is not standard amongst brands like the 5.56 is most of the time. You limit yourself greatly when it comes to aftermarket parts when compared to the AR-15 platform. Honestly the M&P 10 with its 18" barrel would make a horrible home defense rifle. It's physical dimensions (size and weight) along with the .308 ballistic round were not made for this purpose. A comparison would be driving a Indy car in the Baja desert race. It shines at 200 plus yards. I recently sold my M&P 10 and bought another company's .308 semi auto rifle and find it boring to shoot inside 300 yards. Everyone has their own thing so good luck in whatever you decide.

If you are really thinking home defense, take a look at the new AR style shotgun by Rhino. It has interchangeable 12 gauge and .308 upper receivers. A couple of YouTube channels have already started highlights of it from Shot show 2014.
