Thinking of getting a M&P 40.

I liked mine before I started having trouble with it. I guess I got a lemon. Try other brands and do some research before you buy. I belong to a range that will let me try one free but I have to buy a box of ammo for it. The M&P 40 was one of my first and didn't try many others before I bought it.

What kind of problems?

I have a 40c with over 4800 rounds through it. It has been perfect, with the exception of a single failure to feed, which was probably ammo-related. Recoil is only slightly greater than my 9mm SIG P320 compact, and I quickly adjusted to it. Recoil on a full-sized should be even better. I like my 40c so much that it has become my EDC. However, as others have said, rent one at a range and fire at least 100 rounds before you decide.

M&P 40L

Last summer I acquired my PC M&P 40L CORE with the 5 inch ported stainless barrel. Being a Glock fan, I have to admit that this is one heck of an accurate shooter. It now holds a place of honor in my safe as being one of my favorite pistols....

Let me put it to you this way... I find my full sized M&P40 more pleasant to shoot than either my .38 J-frame or my 9mm subcompact P-11.
^ same here, so much so that I am looking at getting the .40 in the compact to carry instead of my JFrame.
I'm also a fan of the winchester 165 grain ammo.

You haven't said what you want the pistol for. Plinking? Bullseye? USPSA Production? Limited? Open? CCW? TEOTWAWKI? Why .40?

The Shield 9 is noticeably more controllable and nicer to shoot than the Shield .40. That's the only back-to-back comparison I've done recently.

Mainly plinking and HD. Why the .40: the last panic showed that there was plenty of .40 on shelves, and I want to have my own opinion on the caliber. After the holidays I want to meet up with a friend who will let me shoot his G23.

I have both an M&P40 & a 40C & at least to me the recoil is not a problem with any load. the last time I was at a range with my LEO son I shot both of my 40s & his off duty G23, G21 (.45 cal) & a G19 (9mm). I never even paid attention to recoil so it must have been negligible for all of them.

I attached a picture for you. The shots on the right are from an M&P 40 I just bought used. The groupings on the left are from a pistol in 40 that I had put nearly 300 rounds through. I did 2 test magazines each to compare what I thought about accuracy from the M&P...the picture shows how I feel.

I rented the 9 last week and the outcome was the same as the 40 only a lot tighter grouping.

Shot my gen 4 Glock 23 and my M&P 40C yesterday. The 40C was softer shooting compared to the G23. I have 9mm conversion barrels for both and the 40C again shot softer than the G23. My dad was with me and agreed. I imagine the FS M&P 40 should be the same or slightly better so I'm thinking about getting one of those too.:)

I've got the m&p 9mm fs and a M&P 40c. I can shoot the 40c just as accurate or more than the 9mm. The recoil is not much more than the 9mm with factory loads. Both a joy to shoot.
