I'm ready for a change and new chapter in my life. Need to evacuate California, due to the political climate, immigration issues and abundance of fire and lack of water.

I'm looking to move to the middle eastern part of Idaho, particularly Salmon, ID. I want seclusion, no traffic and beautiful mountain scenery. The southern and western areas are too commercial and high desert for me. North will be too cold and too much snow.

Anyone have thoughts or experiences to share?

I would also want to get as far from the San Andreas Fault as is allowed by your other requirements. And a place with fewer catastrophic mudslides. Okay, so I'm a wuss.

I could pitch a tent in the back yard for ya.

Or you could move into the fully equipped basement like Ken.

Sorry, you don't want the snow & ice we have coming.

Good fortune on your search for a new abode!!!!:D

(I was worried you were thinking Syria or something)

I spent two weeks on a wild fire assignment in the Salmon National Forest, very beautiful area and very steep terrain. I only got to spend one afternoon in the town of Salmon but from what I remember it was very nice. While working on the fire I could look down in the valley and see people whitewater rafting on the Salmon River.
That was in the summer time, so I have no experience with how cold the winter months are out there. It is definitely an outdoorsman's paradise with plenty of hunting, fishing, camping, horseback riding places to have fun.

Mid East????? I was gong to ask if you had a meltdown...Nothing East about Idaho unless you are in Washington or Oregon....Mid East I was ready to call the men in white coats.....Like your head????

Don't know much about Idaho but it was on the top 10 list of places to retire. I'd personally check it out but Mrs. Chief38 would not survive there. Too slow a pace for her.

Salmon is a beautiful place that happens to be on the way to and from a lot of beautiful places. That is probably why I have found myself there several times over the last fifty years, even though it is nowhere close to where I live.

However, it shares at least one weird attribute with Twin Falls for certain, and maybe other places in Idaho. That is, the town's youth seem to be unduly obsessed with the presence of strangers in their town. Most other places in the mountain West are used to tourists, and usually pretty much ignore them unless actually transacting business with them. But in these Idaho towns, the young buzzcocks will spot you right away for an out-of-towner, and will stalk you for hours as you move about their town.

They might do it singly in a jacked-up sedan or a ratty piece of squidware motor cycle. Or they may do it in a group, pacing you on the other side of the street.

I don't know if it is some variant of the LDS xenophobia (like you would encounter in a place like Hanksville, UT), or if it would happen to you anyplace else in Idaho, or if something else is going on. But one thing is for sure; you will not be able to slip into town unnoticed.

Rent before you buy. We have always considered Salmon part of the temperate region, aka Banana Belt. Close to Gibbonsville and a few other out of the way attractions.

Come to South Carolina. If the mosquitos dont kill you, the cooking will. My wife puts bacon drippings in almost everyting she cooks. I think she may be trying to kill me young

I'm quiet and a bit of a loaner so I figured if I don't come to town looking like Sasquatch, the locals might leave me alone. :D Where's the Jack Links? ;)

I'm looking fwd to 4 seasons. Snow and cold weather don't bother me too much, especially if I have projects to work on in a home shop. Many of the homes I have looked at have a large detached shop/garage, which is a must for me.

One thing I'm considering is to sell many of my handguns her in CA before going. 1. I can get much more for them 2. Once they leave CA, they can't return. Many people here in CA that will appreciate that.
