Like the thread title says, I am thinking of purchasing one of these. It will be my first 1911 and I am torn between this one and a full-size. Will be CCW'd in winter time if it proves reliable.

So what do you guys think? Anyone have one? The guys at my local shop keep trying to steer me towards a Kimber, but I have heard that some of them have problems (only heard over the interwebs and I think their popularity creates haters).

What do these pistols go for in your neck of the woods?

Thanks,
Jack

Jack, I just got one of the S&W in the Gunsite model, basically the same gun. Picked it up from Buds used in the box, looked like new for a little over $800. I have Colts, Kimbers and Springfield Armory in full size and the compact, I find myself carrying the compacts a little more often just because the are a little lighter and carry easier. As far as how they function, shoot and preform at 25 yards and under I can't tell a lot of difference. They all feed everything I have put through them (all stock) and if I do my part they will stack shots on top of one another. You will get more recoil with the light weights which is to be expected but nothing to be concerned with. I would think it is more personal taste than anything. If it's one you Will carry, it's the right one.

Thanks Marshal. How does the SW compare to your other 1911's? Would you recommend another brand?

1911 Compact

I'm not familiar with the S&W but I just bought a Springfield EMP 40 and it is the best gun I ever bought, and I've bought many. I wanted something concealeable but potent. I have a Colt 45 ACP and for me the 45 may be too much in a small gun. The 40 on the other hand is a pleasure to shoot. I put 150 rounds through it as soon as I could get to the range and never felt intimidated by the recoil. I thought it a good value because it comes with 3 mags, a holster and a magazine holster for the two spare mags. Plus I specifically wanted the 40 S&W. 8 in the magazine and one in the tube makes a bad day for the bad guys. But this is a S&W site, and I've never had a bad S&W. Now Walther is another story.
