Thinking of selling my 2206 what’s it worth?

I was digging through my safe a couple of months ago and uncovered my 2206 that I’d forgotten all about. I bought it new in the early 90’s for my 10 year old son, now 37. to shoot in some local action pistol matches. When he turned 14 I got him into flying and we totally forgot about it.

I love 22’s but I’m partial to revolvers. Im debating whether I want to sell I, trade it or just keep it but have no idea what it’s worth. I’ve researched but Ive found very few for sale.

What I have is a 6” 2206 in the box with all cards and literature, orange takedown tool and site tool. There are a few very minor marks. It has the standard adjustable sight, not target sight and six magazines. Three mags are factory 10 round and three are factory 12 round. All are working properly as is the pistol.

What should this bring in a trade or sale? I’m not sure if I’m going to part with it but curious about the value.

The values of these have steadily increased since they were discontinued. I gather they are particularly suitable for mounting a suppressor as part of their popularity.

I think you could get about $400-450, but the bigger question is will you regret selling it? Good luck in your decision.

I’ve read they’re easily adapted for a suppressor.

I’m thinking I’ll make another range trip before making a decision.

Of the assorted models that S&W made in that series, only the 2206 is full stainless. The others have alloy frames. That makes it the most valuable and sought after, not including the more limited TGT and vent rib models.

Given the way you've described the whole package, box, docs, mags... this particular offering would do very well if listed by a well-known dealer on Gunbroker. I'd expect it to sell for more than the average 422 or 622 for certain.

I couldn't see it go for less than $600, and could potentially go a good bit higher.

The key to the potential high value here (IMHO) is the three pre-ban 12-round magazines. While the Model 2206 is hardly a defensive handgun, there is still some good demand (and high asking prices) for the old 12-rounders. The box and all is great, but those "few very minor marks" (i.e., some signs of use, not NIB pristine) and not being the TGT version have to be weighed in too. The last non-TGT 2206 I found went for $285 in really good shape, but no box and with only one magazine. In general, I really don't see the 2206 going for a lot more money than a same condition 422 or 622, but that could just be my local market.

Bottom line: I think I'd try to sell the three pre-ban 12-round magazines by themselves and keep the rest of the package!

They sell all the time. I tried to post a link to GB's completed sales of at least a half-dozen guns like yours, but all I get is the log-in link. They're on there, though.

The suppressor adaptor is about $25. You'll need to buy or make a tool to remove the barrel nut so it can be installed, but the tool is inexpensive to buy; if you're careful, you can make something that will work in its place and not damage the nut or finish.

TTSH is right about the 12-round mags. Sell them individually.

Your 2206 in its condition and with three 10-round mags should bring $450 to $500, IMHO, on a site like GB. Or you could try to sell it here on the Forum. I bet you'd find a buyer, and there'd be no fee.

I found one person trying to get $125 for 12 round mags. You can ask any price you want but that doesn’t mean you’ll get it so what would be a fair price for used 12 round mags?

I’ve never sold a firearm on a forum or out of state. I’m assuming it must go through a FFL on my end and one on the other. Also I’m assuming it must be shipped by fedex or ups and notify them what it is. Is that correct?

Not necessarily. The best way to ship a handgun (in my experience) is to have your dealer do it. As he is a licensed dealer, he is allowed to ship it USPS Priority to another dealer, and most who offer this service do so for $35-$50.

The receiving dealer will charge the end buyer a small fee to get it.

Thanks for the information on shipping. I shipped one of my 1911’s to have a new barrel fitted and Fedex charged $95. I about had a nose bleed. $35-50 is much better.

The law states that a regular non-dealer like you and me cannot ship through USPS and must use a common carrier such as UPS/FedEx. That's the requirement of the law.

UPS/FedEx however have their own requirements for firearms to be shipped by air only, 2 days at most.

So theoretically, you could ship via UPS/FedEx and use a lower priced ground service, that would not be illegal, but it would go outside UPS/FedEx terms. And if you experienced loss or damage... you'd likely have no recourse to be made whole.

When I’ve shipped to S&W on their prepaid label it’s always 2nd day air. Much cheaper than overnight.

Not sure how I could export it to Canada. I exported a large piece of electronic equipment to Australia a few years ago and swore I’d never do anything like that again. The regulations, paperwork and dealing with US agencies was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done. I think it would have been easier to have shipped the equipment to the moon.
