Thinking out loud

I have M&P9's in the full size, compact and 22lr and like them a lot. I don`t shoot the 22 as much because I have a S&W Model 41 that I love. Anyway I`m now thinking about getting a Shield also and having a tough time qualifying why I should add it when I have the compact. I've never owned the same gun in different sizes except for a brief time when I owned 1911's.

Now I live in the communist state of Illinois, to my surprise, they have actually passed a CC law, I will be getting a CCpermit ASAP. Now to the problem. What do I gain owning 3 M&P9's does the Shield do something that my Compact doesn't, does it make sense to add the Shield? Jim

Well, I'm not well versed in IL law but know of the recent legal wins permitting CC.

The Shield is a single stack so it's a bit thinner than the Compact and therefore a bit easier to conceal. However, it carries a few less rounds (depends on caliber).

Other than "completing the collection", I'm not sure what it does for you. As you head in winter, you'll be wearing heavier clothing and concealing is more easily done. You might consider just using the compact for now and deciding in the Spring if you need a thinner weapon.

If it were me and I already had the compact I would just stick with it. IMO there is not enough difference in size/weight to warrant owning both. Plus you can use your FS mags with the compact if desired.

I CC a compact year round, but here in Western Washington it never really gets hot like the Midwest (I remember visiting relatives in the summer) so that might be an issue. I wear an OWB holster with a t-shirt and an untucked shirt in the summer. Here if it gets over 80 degrees, people start passing out.

I am thinking of getting a Shield myself. It is a nice in-between gun for pocket and conceal carry. The compact S&W is probably as good for conceal carry with the right holster, but the weight is one thing the Shield has the advantage over the compact. Be cool to have one of each model, next you need the Bodyguard .380.

I'm finding out you can never have too many M&P's. I love to shoot 'em all especially my .40 Shield and my wife's 9mm Shield.

If you can afford it, why not?

Could not agree more. There is not much difference between the two guns. Plus the 9c holds more rd.s
