Internet premium (Proxibid) is 24%. Subtract 3.5% if paying by check. Subtract another 3% if you phone bid. That's 17.5% if you phone bid or leave a bid on their website and pay with a check.
Sales tax is only collected for Illinois residents (unless recently changed?).
Shipping used to be very reasonable--$40-$50 per gun. Shipping rates have skyrocketed of late and I'm sure RIA is having to pass that along.
The only thing I have against RIA is their starting bids. Once you place the starting bid and add the fees, you are at the low estimate. There is no way to get a deal anymore unless the estimate is low--which happens occasionally but is rare.
RIA is now charging sales tax for other states, at least for Texas. I agree with the OP, though; prices are getting insane. I rarely walk away from a Premium Auction with nothing, mostly because I value quality over price, but this time, anything I was interested in almost immediately zoomed beyond what I thought was reasonable. This time I made a few bids, but they were laughable considering what the hammer price ended up at.
Shipping is high, but I have always decided it was reasonable considering how well everything was packed.
As I recall, starting bid used to be 50% of the low estimate. Now it seems to be 50% of the high. I saw a few lots where they had to lower the initial bid to get it started.
I haven't used Proxibid, but if you use RIA Live instead, the premium is 1% over the RIA baseline 17.5% buyer premium. Add sales tax and shipping, I usually figure 30-33% over the bid price as the actual cost, at least for me in Texas.
