My 6 inch model 28-2 came with magnas.

My 3-1/2 inch model 27-2 came with targets.

I find both type of stocks comfortable to shoot with.

But I think the targets fit better in a longer barrel. And I think they are bit "too much" in a 3-1/2.

So, I swaped them.:D

Like most people, my hand is wider at the top than at the bottom. Yet most SB revolver stocks are made just the opposite. I have pondered this for over four decades. I will likely die before the reasoning behind stock design is revealed. I personally do not care for factory target or magma stocks, with the exception of the SB J frame magmas. I like the RB K frame targets, K & N combats in RB or SB, and the J frame RB and RB/SB stocks.

I like the swap too. Are the magnas numbered to the 28? If so then they really belong on the 28. Guess no harm keeping them swapped until one of the guns is sold.

There are 3 digits on the right magna. They appear to have been applyied with a rubber stamp, I see no relation with them neither to the serial number nor to the assembly number. The targets are unnumbered.

You reminded me of one thing.:D The first president of my shooting club(an excellent shot if I ever saw one) used to say, seeing my performance with revolvers(from the cap & ball to the modern Smith & Wessons with the SAA in the middle). "This guy was born to shoot revolvers".:D

S&W didn't number Magna stocks with a rubber stamp, they used a metal stamp that left impressions in the wood. Targets of that era were not numbered.

The switch makes perfect sense to me. 27-2" before about 1975 cane with Magna stocks and a pasteboard box. After that, they came with 3T's (target trigger, hammer and stocks) in a presentation case. Your 27-2 doesn't have a target trigger, so I suspect it shipped with Magna's.

I am no expert but I don't think HPs ever came with target stocks, so I guess you've got non-original stocks on both guns now - they match!

Just kidding. Whatever works for you. :)

The 28-2 is from 1976. The stock has no apparent impression on the wood, that is why I said rubber stamp. And it's only 3 digits that seem unrelated to any number in the gun, the last one(an 8) even seems to be upside down.

The gun came from Germany without any box or tools. Same as the 27-2.
The 27-2 serial number is N206962. Any information on the year of manufacture appreciated.

I've never found the target stocks to be comfortable for my hand. I do have them on my 29 but on my well-used shooters, I prefer magnas. I've looked at and seen a lot of HP's and never saw them with target stocks. That is pretty unusual. I always figured the magnas came with the 28s as it was a cheaper revolver than the 27. But, I just pulled that out of my ***.

I like it. I think Targets look like too much on a 3.5" barrel.
And Magnas look small on longer barrels.

Here'e my 28-2 with its factory Magna grips. They look puny.

I put these Targets on it and they never really looked quite right.
Maybe because they are "new" and too "pretty" for the gun.
Maybe I'll sell them. I don't have anything else for them to go with.

So this morning your post prompted me to look and see what else I had and swapped them out for these.

A combination of showing some wear and the color I think they just look a lot better.

This is the only 3.5" that I've had. A pre-27 shipped in Aug 1955 with Magna grips.
