I went to Gander Mountain this afternoon to get a box of Remington .38 SPL 158gr +P SWCHP ammo. The clerk scanned the box of ammo at the register and said "that will be $55.85 sir"

I had to pick my jaw up off of the floor and gather my self as I was in a deep state of price shock. Once I had my wits back about me I replied with "thanks but no thanks" and made a bee line while I still had my wallet in my pocket. Now I've seen it all.

I was pleased to find that the local Gander Mt.
had Winchester Super X 357Mag 125gr JHP. The good stuff. Price: $71.00 No joke! I left without it.

CTD has aluminum case Blazer 380 for 69.97 plus shipping. Sad thing is, they may actually sell a box for that. When this panic settles down, as it will, we all need to remember who tried to screw us.

Just remember it wasn't the merchant. This could be moved to political and 2nd ammendment!

They actually sold out, and rather quickly, or so the net buzz says.

Saw some .380 ammo listed at GB. I can't believe the bids being thrown around. I can't blame the seller, he started a reasonable bid. The bidders run the price up, he just benefits. I wonder if they'll really pay up when it's over.

Some places are price gouging like crazy!

If your looking for that 38 ( FBI ) Load, ammo to go has the Federal 38G for $29.95 a box. It's listed under Federal LE.

Best

The gun industry is killing itself with price gouging every where. This goes way beyond supply and demand in my opinion and gets down to greed and short term profit taking. My local discount stores are the only place to buy components or ammunition. Believe me I will remember this when the shortage of everything is over.

One thing I've noticed on my recent trips to the range is that there are a WHOLE LOT of new shooters out there and they are shooting a lot of ammo. I've never seen so much wasted ammo go downrange in all my life.

Three things come to mind:

1. They don't know what a good price is for ammo and will pay whatever is being asked.

2. This (tremendous I think) increase in demand is causing the supply to dry up.

3. That leads to panic buying and hoarding.

I do think things will cool off by the summer, no pun intended, and (hopefully) supply will catch up and prices will drop somewhat. I don't think prices will return to 2006 levels, but I've been wrong in the past.

Here's hoping...

Yes I agree about the new guys. They are on all the major auctions driving up the prices on the guns. I have watched this on Gunbroker NR bidders driving up the prices beyond reality. The good thing is that the sport needs all the gun people we can get.

i noticed the other day gander mountain had 460 mag.ammo (corbon)$99.00 for twenty rounds!!!!

thats about 10 times the price that i can reload them for

At the Bass Pro store north of Dallas, Texas, I purchased a box of 50 Remington .38 SPL 158gr +P SWCHP for about $30.
Imagine my shock to learn you were asked to pay nearly $56.
I thought $30 was awfully high for a box of 50 but I was on vacation and needed some decent fodder for my S&W 637 2" J-frame.
I've been reloading for nearly 40 years and rarely buy factory ammo, except for rimfires, of course.
Contrary to popular counsel, I also carry my own handloads for self defense.
I don't carry anything beyond what the factories typically offer: no incendiary, poison-gas, mercury-tipped, explosive bullet silliness that can get you in trouble with a jury -- even with a justified shooting.
A lead SWC hollowpoint over X-grains of fast powder works well in my .38 snubnose. It basically duplicates the Remington SWCHP load, but the fast powder gives me a little more velocity from the 2-inch snub.

Ammo prices today. Reminds me of the final words spoken in the classic movie, "Bridge Over the River Kwai" ...

"Madness! Madnessssss!"
