This old gun

[Howstew]

I have an old revolver stamped American Bulldog, with 3” barrel, no other markings. The bore is .44 caliber. This one is chrome plated. I believe the chamber is .44 Russian. The overall condition looks good and shootable.
Does anyone have any idea what this is and what it may be worth?
I’ll try to post a photo if there’s any interest.

Photos would be VERY helpful. Such guns were often made by H&R or Iver Johnson, usually in a smaller caliber but the .44 is not unknown. Barrel was usually shorter than 3 inches. Strictly a black powder weapon.

Iver Johnson made an "American Bulldog .44" that came in various barrel lengths. I'm not sure if they were .44 Russian, .44 Webly or .44 Special.

Did a little more research. The .44 Bulldog cartridge was loaded until the late 1930s. Those loads were in fact smokeless.

The Hi-Point of the old west. It has been said it was the most popular handgun in the west. Not because they were good guns, but because they were cheap and small. Few people ever had to use one but gave confidence to have one in your pocket. Custer had one, so did many famous gun fighters. I never knew one to sell for over $300.

Actually Custer's was a Webley Model 1 1/2 in .442 Webley.

I saw a brand new Charter Bulldog (5-shot 44 Special) for around $400 yesterday and a Pitbull (5-shot 45 ACP) for $65 more. If I hadn't just bought a S&W 396 two week ago, I would be all over either or both!
