This west coast Rufous Hummingbird is NOT supposed to be in Georgia, and I shot it!

We have a pair of Rubys (at least, I think they are) that nest in the ficus tree on our front porch on and off every couple years. I've had the honor of petting them a couple times, with no ill effects. I'll try to dredge up my low-quality pics (I'm a hamfist with a camera) from the last visitation.

Never seen a Rufous around here. Beautiful bird!

These were still in my photobucket:

Great picture, Tom. I am still feeding one male Anna's, a male Black chinned and an unidentified female/juvenile. As it happens I'll have to refill the feeder tonight.

My buddy saw an Anna's up in red Rock Canyon just yesterday. Thought that was odd unless the visitors' center has a feeder.

We've still got a handful of Anna's fighting over the 3 feeders here just south of Seattle, and you can hear them all over the place out walking around.

They seem to have figured out who fills the feeders, they let me walk right up while they are feeding. I bring the feeders in at night when it's below freezing, and put them out all warmed up just before sunrise. It's fun to watch them come in for that first drink, they sip a bit, then sit there on the perch for maybe a minute while the metabolism gets going, then it's another drink and off to the races for the rest of the day.

At the old house, I've had to hand carry more than a couple outside after they flew in the wide open french doors, usually in the evening. Jsut darken the room and they'll land and you can carefully scoop 'em up and show them the way out.

Hummingbirds are our favorites too. We feed them and have planted a bunch of honeysuckle, flowers, etc. to attract them.
Usually have 4 or 5 regulars that stay all summer. Won`t see any around here `till maybe April. Have never found a nest though. Caught one by hand a couple years ago-was trapped in the garage. Carried him outside and released him. It didn`t seem to bother him much at all.

This year, I have a woodpecker across the street==doesn't usually show up until April or so. The Canada's are hanging around all winter in large numbers and not continuing further south.

An ornithologist friend (BS in ornithology) says the first thing with birds is through out the range maps-birds can't read!
