As I was strolling through my local gun emporium earlier today I noticed a clean looking 6" Model 14 K-38. I checked it out. It was in basically very nice shape and timed correctly. Unfortunately one grip was badly damaged, and some moron with a 1/2" screwdriver took the sideplate off at some point, leaving nice round circular marks on the sideplate.

They are asking $450, with the outrageous local sales tax, DOJ, etc. that will push it to a tad over $500.

I'm thinking that is a trifle high. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

I've seen pristine 14's go for around $700 in my neck of the woods. Mine has had most of the blue removed from the side plate by some chemical reaction and I picked it up for $350 a few years ago. If the screw driver mark and a bad set of factory stocks are the only bad points, $500 doesn't sound too bad. BTW, I usually take the factory stocks off and save them anyway. BTWII, 14's are pretty sweet.

A K-38 is a most elegant piece of work but what you describe is like a Ferarri with a broken windshield and bent frame. I would pass.

I normally pay about $20 shipping and $25 FFL transfer fee if I buy a gun online. That means your looking at finding a K-38 for $455 on one of the auction sites. Also, a lot of the auction sellers won't ship to CA even if the gun is on the approved list.

I'm not so sure it is that bad a deal, but you might want to check Gunsamerica and Gunbroker and see what is out there.

What I can say is that the K-38s tend to be sweet shooting guns and if you buy one, you should be very happy with it cosmetic issues aside.

Arguably the 'king' of Smith 38 Special revolvers. If you enjoy shooting a mild centerfire Smith, you can't do any better. If the cosmetics don't bother you, I would consider going ahead with the purchase.

I picked mine up last month for 600 and its 99% with everything from the factory and only a faint turn line. It was on an auction site and I believe started around 500

older S&W prices have cycled up again lately. :(

Personally I would rather spend maybe a $100 or so more and get a pretty one. ;)

Everyone saying they are not hard to find and to shop online please note he lives in CA where importing a non-approved gun is illegal. If it's not in the state now it can't be brought in for the purpose of selling it. This is the "CA factor" in figuring values. CA residents always pay way more because of the Draconian gun laws.

Also, because of the problems for FFLs doing business in CA the average charge for a transfer is more like $75-$100, not $20-$30 like the rest of us pay. That is, IF you can find a CA FFL who will do a transfer. Maybe 90% refuse.

If you want a Model 14 I say buy this one. When was the last time you saw one for sale in CA?

I agree with SaxonPig. Buy it and then you'll surely find another. At least that's the way it works for me.

I just bought one on Gunbroker for $392 shipped to my FFL; got it today! If you find someone who'll ship to your state, you can get a better deal. Search Gunbroker's "completed auctions" and you'll see some that recently went for $300-$310. I know because I've been looking for a while now. $450 is a lot for one that's been gouged up.

WY- Again, your advice is useless as this gun or a similar one cannot legally be shipped to CA. Not a question of finding an FFL who will ship to CA as NONE will send this gun as it's illegal to import. This is why guns cost more in CA. If it isn't already in the state it cannot legally be brought in to be sold.

I didn't know that. Thank you for the diplomatic way in which you enlightened me.

I'm changing my opinion to "Buy it!"

Thanks, SP, for staying on top of this one for those of who are lucky enough to live where gun purchases are unencumbered.

Because I'm a states' rights kind of guy, I do have to say that I respect the rights of states to regulate these matters according to their own democratic vision--as hard as I know it is for all my California friends. Nothing they can do in the short run, though, but suck it up. Or move.

A lot of folks don't understand the situation in CA. A few years ago the Gestapo... er, the state legislature in CA created an approved list of handguns. Any pistol not on the list cannot be sold by dealers in the state or imported for sale. It costs thousands of dollars to get a gun approved, and each variation in finish, barrel length, etc must be separately approved. The approval expires and must be renewed every few years. Manufacturers pay to have models they currently offer listed, but who would pay to keep out of productions guns listed? Once C&R qualified, the gun is not subject to the approved list law.

The only way a gun such as a Model 14-3 (not old enough to be C&R but no longer in production) can be sold in CA is if an owner sells it in a private transfer (going through an FFL as per more state law). The dealer cannot sell it from his inventory so if an FFL has one, or takes one in trade, he HAS to sell it out of state (notice all the auctions on GunBroker by CA dealers selling guns that can't be sold in state). If a CA resident sees a beautiful M14-3 for sale priced at $5 in AZ or OR he cannot legally buy it as it's illegal to ship it or bring it into CA for purpose of selling it. If someone moves to CA and owns such a gun he can sell it once he's a resident. But sending the gun into CA specifically to sell it is prohibited.

This is why classic guns are so much harder to find in CA. This is why prices are so much higher, there. It's a seller's market. Plus, all sales MUST go through an FFL (add fees), all pistols are registered with the CA DOJ (add fees for each), so the final cost of exercising one's Second Amendment rights is sky high.

This is why I fled CA in 1992. I grew up there. Had a job I at worked at for 14 years. Owned a home. When all these awful gun laws started coming to pass in the late 1980s I knew I had to get out or one day I would snap and kill me a bunch of lawyers in Sacramento. I quit my job, sold my house, packed up and left. Took me 15 years to get to where I was financially. Only see my friends and family once a year at Christmas. It's been tough but I had to do it. I can't go back to that state until folks have finally had enough of the Nazis/Marxists in power there and rise up in opposition.

Call me when that happens. I can be there in about 20 hours. Of course, with the Commies in Congress ready to ram unwanted government take overs down our unwilling throats, the fight may start from wherever you are at the time.

PS: I hope this explanation was diplomatic enough.
