Thoughts on the Springfield Saint AR Pistol

My thoughts are “why would I want this when I can buy 2 decent AR15 rifles for nearly the same money?” It just strikes me as a poor value. Just my $.02.

It seems "ok" from the photos, but there are a few features I'm not in love with. Those include the heavy tungsten buffer, the "forward blast diverter", and the SIG brace.

I don't see the need for a heavy weight buffer, especially in a 5.56 gun. Light weight is preferred for the entire package.

I would prefer an effective flash hider on a short barrel like this than a blast diverter. It sounds like they're planning more for indoor range usage than anything else. I'm running the Vortex flash suppressor, which does an outstanding job even in dark range conditions.

The SIG brace is ok, but I much prefer the KAK brace.

For the price quoted, I would probably be inclined to construct my own. Below is my AR pistol, that was made by a local firm and then custom parts added by me.

It's what I consider a "toy". I can think of no legitimate civilian use for it.

But, to each his own, that's why they make them, someone will buy them to play with.

I have one and love it, can't say enough great things about it. Super, typical Springfield quality. Mine was around $879 so that's not a bad price. I replaced the arm brace with the SB CQB Collapsible arm brace. Haven't got recent photos yet, but I've replaced my bolt assist lever with the Phase 5 B.A.D. lever, replaced my trigger guard with the Timber Creek Skeletonized trigger guard, put a low profile Sig laser on the front and adding a Sig red dot later. I ordered Indignant Arms billet grips with Cocobolo wood grip panels and have a Fostech Binary Trigger on the way too. It may not be for everybody, buts that's why they make chocolate and vanilla. Get one, you won't be sorry. One thing I really like are the proprietary M-lock barrel shroud by Magpul, you can't get them by themselves and the other ones just look too chunky to me.

Technically they are a handgun and are covered by a concealed carry permit.....even from a 7" barrel a soft point .223 has more stopping power than a handgun round...... short and handy vs a rifle...... 20 round mag.

"Practical" is a whole "nuther" matter

AR rifle with stock closed is about 32" ; my 9mm Beretta CX-4 Storm PCC is about 29" long ; where as the Saint is only 26" in OAL.

You and I use the word decent completely differently....The Saint is a decent AR.... Most of what I see under $600 is bargain bin with suspect part quality.

Shorter with the collapsible arm brace too.

I have not handled one.
But, of the AR pistols I've seen, the
Saint appeals to me most.
I love mine and I really dig the proprietary M-lock barrel shroud too. In fact, that's one of the things that got my attention to begin with and after doing research on the pistol itself, I had to have it. They put a lot of higher end features in it that you'd pay 2k for from other mfgs. Great package for under 1k.

...uh, because some get it, some don't.

Not 100% sure what you mean...but I'll say this. SA launched this massive ad campaign with the Saint...all mysterious and "just you wait to see what we're rolling out with next!!!"...

...and it was an AR...in an ocean of AR's. Big whoop.

An excellent pistol for confined spaces like a truck or car. Better for home defense too. That said, I haven't spent my money for one.

I have a 7.5" AR pistol and can assure you that if you shot that thing in a car or house...you wouldn't have to worry about ever listening to bickering politicians again...or listening to anything else for that matter.

It's a neat-o gun...but rather useless all things considered. The only reasons why I keep mine is primarily because they're a money pit and I'd take a bath shedding it, but also because of the possibility of converting it to .300blk, which I will do if Illinois ever starts allowing silencers. In a suppressed 300, it would be a superb home defense firearm.

*EDIT*
I will say they are fun to shoot...just use quality ammo as mine doesn't like the cheap stuff. I'll say that with an A2, mine was a fireball breathing dragon. Switching to a Smith Vortex ended that issue.

...and did I mention that they're loud?

The AR pistol cool-aid? Yeah...when the braces started making strides, I decided to build one in 2014 using a Rock River pistol marked lower. I landed up with the Shockwave brace/KAK combo and it's really pretty solid. I wanted to keep thing as light as possible, the Shockwave is far lighter than the SIG offerings.

If imgur would fix whatever is causing a 403 error...I'd link a pic to mine, if anyone cares to see it.

Yeah, mine came with the Sig arm brace and I agree it's way too chunky so I immediately purchased the SB PDW collapsible brace and swapped it out when I got home. This thing is stout and looks great to boot. I'd love to see your build!

AN AR pistol looks cool, is extremely loud, impractical to carry, inaccurate due to aiming difficulties, many owners increase their base cost (they will never recover) by adding unlimited gadgets and gizmos because they have drank the kool-aid... I have a SBR with retractable stock with red dots installed on several different caliber uppers which can go from home protection to calling coyotes or even deer hunting if desired.
