THREAD DIE?

I have threaded 1/2-28 on 10-22 barrels in the lathe but a friend bought a die from MSC that was one inch in dia that fits my die handle and now I just thread them in the lathe to pretty close and then run the die over the cut threads. It sure is easier than to use the 3 wire trick to get the threads the proper depth.

Micheal: A quick hint; when you get your threading die, find an old piece of barrel or a steel rod and do a trial run. I bought one from Brownell's a few years ago only to find it cut threads so deep that the flashhider just wobbled around. I had to shorten the barrel and rethread on the lathe. ...... Big Cholla

Not many people know how to use '3-wires' any more.

IM LOOKING FOR A 1/2 X28 TREAD DIE TO THREAD THE BARREL ON MY AR, WHERE CAN I ORDER ONE? THANKS MIKE

You are not planning to do it manually, are you?
I've seen people mess good barrels trying.
To assure the threads are squared, use a lathe.

I like to do my own work, but...

I think in this case you would do a lot better to send your barrel out to a shop that knows what they are doing.

Many AR's as well as other barrels, do not have the bore perfectly centered in the barrel. As a result, many threaded barrels are not threaded concentric to the bore.

If you are using a suppressor (either flash or sound) this can have some dire consequences. Not so bad with a cheap flash suppressor, but if you have sound suppressor with a few hundred dollars invested, you sure don't want baffle strikes, or a wandering zero depending on where the can tightens up.

These guys have an excellent reputation for threading barrels as near to perfect as possible:

Adco Firearms LLC

You don't have to send the whole gun, or just the barrel. They can do the job without dismounting the barrel, so mailing the whole upper will work just fine.
