Thumbpiece Nut 686

Good day all

The Thumbpiece Nut on my 686 is coming loose while shooting.

Would the use of loctite be appropriate? If so what type (number) would I use?

Degrease the area with a spray of electrical contact cleaner. Brake cleaner will also work but some of it is very volatile and I don't like using it on my guns. Then put a drop of the medium or low strength on the stem. Colors vary depending on the maker. Don't use the red or high strength as heat is needed to remove it later.

I use blue Locktite on my Smiths and it works fine.

also i am going to get some electrical contact cleaner to prepare the area

I suspect that you are just not tightening it enough and IMHO should not need Locktite! You do not need to "Gorilla" it, but that's usually one part that almost never comes loose if tightened properly. I make it a point to never use Locktite on a firearm and I have never had any screw come loose except for ONE exception............ Colt SAA's. they say "if you carry a Colt...... carry a screwdriver. I simply cinch them up after shooting and I am good for next time. Just my opinion of course.

Get some LOCTITE 222, which is the low-strength forumula. A small 10ml bottle will last a very long time. Use just a bit on the threads of the screw. It has worked superlatively for me on ejector rods and side plate screws that were prone to work loose and cause trouble. HTH. Sincerely. brucev.
