Thumbpiece ??

I didn't know how to word the title but heres the problem. A friend dropped off a M 10 he was having a problem with.
When pushing the thumbpiece forward, it fails to release the cylinder all the way and you have to use some force to open it. I've had this happen on a couple of my own revolvers but it didn't seem this bad. What's the fix, a thorough cleaning or perhaps the extension on the bolt end? There appears to be a couple of thousands higher on the recoil plate to the end of the locking bolt, thanks..........Dan.
 
Check the ejector rod, and see if it has loosened up, causing the binding.

One of the firsr things i checked was the ejector rod and it seemed to be pretty tight. Didn't S@W change from one thread direction to another either l-r or r-l on one of their dash changes ?.......Dan
 
The original model numbers had a right hand thread.The -1 was a change to left hand.There are -1s that still had the right hand thread,so be careful with those.
 
It seems as if the center pin on the cylinder is catching on the edge of the bolt hole on the recoil plate?.....Dan.
 
The center pin has a radius on it that should allow for some leeway of the bolt being shy of flush on the recoil shield. If it is the pin hanging up on the recoil shield because of a short bolt it depends on how cheap it needs fixed. Can file the front face of bolt, the flat part that hits the BACK side of recoil shield(where pin that touches centerpin comes out of) this will allow bolt to come forward some more until flush. You can replace bolt also as the new bolt will be a little long(at least all of them I have replaced have been) requiring some fitting on the length. If you replace bolt the new one will be MIM and for whatever reason Smith decided the the MIM one would be drilled to a different depth for the bolt plunger and spring so order a plunger and spring at same time as the old pre-mim ones are too long.
Welding a long thin part might work if that is what you had in mind but I think it would be very easy to warp the part and cause other problems.

When you have the cylinder open check the that the end of the bolt is flush with the face of the breech face. If it is, that is exactly where it should be. If it is below flush it is most likely there is debris inside the action causing this, open the gun up and clean it. If it ever was correct there is no way it could ever get out of adjustment!

Second thing to check is the front end of the extractor rod. This assumes you have already verified the extractor rod is tight. Remove the cylinder from the gun. Place it, extractor down on a hard, flat surface. Push down so the center pin is pushed flush with the center bearing of the extractor, the front end of the center pin should be at least flush with the end of the extractor rod, preferably just slightly above. Check by running your finger over the end of the extractor rod. If you can tell you are running over a hole instead of a flat surface, or you can catch your fingernail inside the extractor rod, it needs to be shortened until you do not notice this.

The extractor rod can be shortened with a fine file (If you can file flat/square. This isn't as easy as it sounds!), a lathe, or chuck the extractor rod in a drill press and either use abrasive paper or a fine cut file laid on the drill press table to shorten the extractor rod. This usually is only a few thousandths, even if this is a new extractor rod which has never been properly fitted.

Extractor rods are one of the most frequently replaced parts in a S&W revolver. The reason is there are so many "Bubbas" out there that think the knurling is there to grip with a pair of pliers to tighten the extractor rod. It takes once and the knurling is destroyed and looks like s***. The next owner buys a replacement and just sticks it in the gun without fitting. He finds he has a gun that has problems opening, doesn't know why, and sells it so it will be someone else's problem. You already know the "rest of the story".
 
A postscript concerning the thumbpiece/cylinder sticking! I found a copy of Kuhnhausens book that I'd gotten a long time ago and actually started reading it. One of the chapter/figures detailed the ejector rod and a directive about the proper bevel on the end of the rod where it's knurled. The bevel didn't look quite angled enough so a bit of work with a swiss file and most of the sticking went away. I then touched up the 19-3, 2 1/2" I just picked up and it works better. Thank you to all who responded as you all gave me incentive to tackle this myself..........Dan.
