I have some pitting on my model 10 that needs to be tig welded. my question is what type of steel is the frame made from. I want to use the same type of wire to do the welding so it will blend in as well as possible.

Brownells sells a welding rod that is supposed to match color wise with most gun steels. I have never used it so can't speak for how well it might work. If you pose your question on other gunsmithing forums, you may get a response from someone who has actually done it. I have used soft iron binding wire for weld up small parts and the color match seems to be very good with cold blue. On larger surfaces, small welding repairs may show up though. I know that if iron wire is used and then part is parkerized, there is a color change. I am assuming that you are doing the work yourself so the cost is not such a big deal.

will silver solder not show through nickel plate? I would love to just solder it if the solder wouldn't show.

It won't if its done properly. If you go that route, send it out and let the plating shop fix the pits.

You could always satin Nickel the gun too, you'd be surprized how much pitting is invisible in a satin or flat plated gun.

Check with Jim Stroh at "Alpha Precision"--He has done this type work in the past, and MAY be willing to answer your questions. By the way, he is in Comer, GA--a little ways outside Athens. Hope this helps. Paulie686.
