Timber Rattler

Howdy,

Ate some when we went thru Arizona,

Forgot what it tasted like.

Since we're now in Texas,

you cook it, I'm willing to try eating it.

Bear in mind that this is a protected species in Texas. But I think the Western Diamondback is still okay to kill. Lord,I hope so. They sure don't seem endangered and they are a nasty snake to be bitten by.

I think the Rock Rattler and some others are protected here.

Some think that if you kill a snake, its mate will find you and bite you. I've read this especially about the Black Mamba, Dendoaspis polylepis.

I think what's really involved isn't vengeance but a snake of the opposite gender just following the scent trail of the first snake.

So, if you killed the first in camp, move camp. If at home, you have a potential problem...

I was born and raised in Massachusetts and I sort of remember that there was reported to be a small Timber Rattler population is the Mt. Washington area. Is this not the case anymore?
Jim

There are a few small populations coming back in the blue hills area n central MA. Farther out East/South, they mostly haven't been seen for decades. It's just a matter of time though, Coyotes, Fisher cats. hawks, turkeys.... you name it, they are all repopulating with a vengeance.

When I worked at the propane storage yard East of the city we had 5 or 6 Great Plains Rat Snakes on property. They were nonvenomous and they kept the rodent population down and they eat rattlesnakes so I left them alone.

I ran into them so often I started naming them and they figured out I wasn't going to mess with them so they quit "running" when I walked up on them

I just learned something. I thought timber rattlers were a northern region snake. Didn't know they ranged that far south.

Interesting thing, we haven't seen timber rattlers up here in SE MA for 30 years. Now, the state of Massachusetts is trying to start a breading program to repopulate the state. As you might guess, it's meeting some serious resistance. Nobody seems to want them in their backyard.

The State wanted to populate an island in the Quabbin Res. Once the people found out the rattlers can swim they put up a big stink. I don't think the issue has been settled yet, at least I haven't heard anything.

Bit By Snake.

Bubba and Earl were deep in the woods in South Mississippi cutting paperwood. Bubba had to go pretty bad and went and squatted behind a large tree. Just as he was relieving himself he was bitten in a very sensitive part of his anatomy. Bubba crawled from behind the tree in excruciating pain. He told Earl what had happened and told him to go get some help.

Earl jumped in the wood truck and raced to the doctor's office. He told the nurse what had happened and that he needed the doc to go with him to save Bubba. The nurse said the doc couldn't go because he already had two emergencies in the office but she could probably get the doc to tell him what to do. In a few minutes the doc came out and gave Earl a small scalpel and told him to cut and "X" on each fang mark, suck the blood out, and bring Bubba to the office.

Earl raced back to the woods where he found Bubba on the ground moaning in pain. Bubba asked Earl where the doc was and Earl told him what was going on in the doctor's office and that the doc wasn't coming. Bubba asked Earl if the doc told him anything and Earl replied "yeah, you're gonna die"!
