The first time I heard Stairway was in a dorm room, probably on the day it was released. I could hardly believe what I was hearing on the radio. It might have been a little smoky ;) It was a good year for rock. Besides LZ IV, we can count Who's Next, Aqualung, LA Woman, Meddle, Fillmore East, Blue, Fragile, Pearl, Tupelo Honey, Santana III, Master of Reality, Nantucket Sleighride, Sticky Fingers, Chicago III, Bark, and The Yes Album. A good time was had by all.

Yes - I had to look this up to be sure of dates and, unsurprisingly, misremembered a few.

Myself being a youngster at the tender age of 4 in 1971, some of these albums I am not familiar with.

But "Who's Next" and "The Yes Album" I certainly am.

I think "Who's Next " was their best album.

And "The Yes Album " got me started on a lifelong love of their music. "Starship Trooper" is an all time favorite.

Side note. "90125" came out my Junior year of HS. And many girls who didn't like Yes much before really liked that album. Some very good memories. I'll leave it at that. LOL.

""When the Levee Breaks" is a country blues song written and first recorded by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929. The lyrics reflect experiences during the upheaval caused by the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927.

"When the Levee Breaks" was re-worked by English rock group Led Zeppelin as the last song on their untitled fourth album. Singer Robert Plant used many of the original lyrics and the songwriting is credited to Memphis Minnie and the individual members of Led Zeppelin." (Wikipedia)

Both of these versions are great. I love Led Zeppelin.

Stairway to heaven, high school, slow dancing . . . . carefree times.

The 70's were a fabulous time to be a young, eager and inspired musician. There was a wealth of good material of every genre to draw from. It seemed that emotionally charged expressive music was coming of age and the world was hungry for it.

Rock had taken its training wheels off and hit the fast lane.

August 22, 1969- my buddy Charlie and I took two pretty young ladies to Pirate's World to see Led Zeppelin. Biscayne Bay was in the distance behind the stage and a big storm was brewing out over the Atlantic. Robert Plant, John Bonham and John Paul Jones came out and started playing softly, Jimmy Page came running out, jumped up and hit a big power chord just as the storm lit up behind him. He was all in white with a white cowboy hat and played like a man possessed. As they all did.
It made an impression.
Regards,
