Since my local cousins were scattered for the holidays, my nearby aunt and uncle and I are going out for Christmas dinner. I'm playing chauffer in Batmobile #1. In the middle of the night the thought came to me about how where we're going the staff is working on this day so that we can have a Christmas dinner together. So if like my aunt and uncle and me you are going out this day to celebrate Christmas, think extra hard about the people who are making your Christmas dinner possible and make sure to show your thanks with a specially good tip and kind words.

When I was a CO I worked every Holiday, swing or grave to boot. Not fun but double time and a half. Certainly never got a tip. Be kind to the staff.

Even if the service is not good I tip 10%. A normal tip for me is 20%. If I feel I got really good service I will tip 30%.

I usually carry $2 bills for tips. When I tipped the bus boy for collecting and loading our bags into the car, he looked at the bills and gave me a weird look. I think he thought I was giving him "counterfeit" money. Don't you just love the millennials!

As long as the staff is not surly and gets the order correct, I’m a minimum 10%, if the service is good, I’m in at 20%, if the service is outstanding 30 – 50% will happen.
I do have two pet peeves though. Waite staff that doesn’t understand that a “Tip” is a reward for good or better service. Now for the biggie; as I generally pay in cash, I am sick and tired of being asked “do you need/want any change back?” The last time that happened I removed a $20.00 from the total I had intended to leave, and told him “no you may keep whatever is left.”

Just before Christmas several women from town went to breakfast at their favorite diner. The bill came to $90. When they handed back the bill there was an envelope with $1100 for the three waitresses to split. They took a minute to realize what was happening. As one said, "Good thing we're not wearing eye liner!"
