Guys I'm looking in the Cabela's black-friday flyer. They have a 500 round/55gr./.223 tin for $159.99 & a 300 round/50gr./.223 tin for $139.99. WHat's the difference between Varmint as to the "regular", I guess you can say?

Just curious because I need to do some stocking on .223 ammo.

New .223 owner... be gentle:(

Regular = FMJ = Full Metal Jacket

Varmint Tip = polymer tip or polymer/metal tip. It's projectile truncated like a hollow point (no tip). The tip is soft enough to cause the round to expand on impact. The softer pointy tip also helps preserve the ballistic efficiency.

One more for ya:

Green tip = steel penetrator core.

Don't be shy about asking questions. There are a bunch of good people on this sub-forum.

We really really try to not be like the other forums where if you ask the wrong question you begin to question why you ever went there..Japes covered it real well.

Yup, this is not the other forum. :D

I am assuming you will just be plinking and killing paper targets. If so, then I would go with the cheapest price per round, which looks to be the 55gr. 50gr Varmint bullets are great for specific purposes, and in my experience with the Hornady variety, extremely accurate and fun to load. For plinking ammo, however, they are unnecessary.
