I took the course several years ago.
They told us that it would take from 60 - 90 days to get the permit.
It took them 88 days to send me mine....

My wife sent her fingerprints in 16 days ago (the last requirement) and her TN Handgun Carry Permit came TODAY :)

She's at work, so she doesn't know. I believe a trip to the FNGS is in order for a Happy Permit Day present :D

Back in early January my daughter applied for her GA Weapons License. She went to the Probate Judge's office and filled out the paper work Monday morning. They sent her on over to the Sheriff's Office for fingerprinting and a background check. Her GWL arrived in the mail on Wednesday morning. Forty-eight hour turn-around time ain't bad. I understand that all GA counties don't have that speedy a response.

DeadAye, congrats on living in a free state. It ain't like that everywhere. Some states are a little more "progressive" () than GA and TN.

They likely have fewer applications coming in now than they did when they first started offering permits. Even government employees can occasionally be efficient. ;) :D

Same thing happened when my son applied for his TN HCP in 2010. He had it in his hand in less than two weeks after he finished the application process. When I sent mine in in 1998, it took all 90 days for it to show up in the mail.

Try applying for one in Louisiana. After jumping through hoops, getting paperwork ready, taking handgun instruction and being printed, it will be a little over four months before you can begin looking for your permit.

I wish someone would tell me why the delay is that long. A Parish permit can be obtained in 15 minutes from start to finish.

The one thing that threw me for a loop here in Tennessee was getting the latent prints taken. The Monroe County Sheriffs Department will not do this. They suggest going to a UPS Store in the next Country. Other Agencies do not also.
Back in Florida my Agency would do the latent print cards 24/7. It takes less then five minutes to do two cards. Comm Center would call in a Patrol Officer to do the prints if a Tech wasn't available. (no fee).

It didn't take that long to get a TN HCP, but the one I received wasn't mine. Nashville had sent out all the permits for the period in one batch and had mixed up the applicants addresses. So, everyone got someone else's permit. I called the guy for the permit I had and mailed it to him. No one called me so I called Nashville. The supervisor said she would mail out another but when I asked her about retrieving the original she wasn't interested. Having my HCP floating around somewhere was a bit disconcerting but nothing ever came of it. This was a long time ago... I guess they're getting better at it.

They do fingerprints (full hand prints) at Driver Service Centers. It's like a scanner.

When I got mine, if you went to the Sheriffs office and had digital (scanned) prints you got yours a a 2-3 weeks. If you had ink prints it was months.

Several guys in our church just went through the process and three of them got theirs back in two weeks. Must be less traffic or they have added personnel to assist. For you guys in the gun scared states and towns, get out the vote, find out what the candidates are all about and vote the good ones in and the bad ones out....

Hey Phil, I got something that belongs to you. :D

When I renewed my TNHCP a few years ago the DoS (Drivers License Clerk) told me that my permit would expire before my new permit arrived in the mail. This was FIVE MONTHS before my old permit expired. I was also told that some reciprocity states will not honor the "Continuation" paperwork that I was given as an extension of expiration date until my permit arrived in the mail. 196 days after I filed for a new permit I received my new permit in the mail. Yes, I carried "Legally/illegally" and hoped that I didn't get asked for my permit while out of state.

I am in the exact boat as this now.Son got his in 3 to 4 weeks, I been 60 days and still waiting.

Glad this thread was resurrected. It reminded me that my HCP expires in 2014 so I better get the renewal started soon.

Got mine from Utah even though I'm in Virginia. Took the class at the Eastern Sports Outdoor Show a few years back from Utah Legal Heat. They did the picture, forms and fingerprints in the class. I mailed it all away with a check and got my CCP with my photo on it (recognized government photo ID) in about 35 days. It's good for 5 years. Now, they will only issue to out of state applicants if they have one from their home state first.

Check out Utah Legal Heat - they travel across the country to different shows.

Why would you need a permit from Utah? Does this have an advantage over your home state permit?

It covers more states than Virginia's reciprocity agreements and I travel a bit. At the time, it was also easier to get than Virginia's. They have the same requirements but instead of having to go to the court house and wait for hours to get fingerprinted by a pissed off deputy, it was done in the class and it also serves as a second government issued photo ID. I believe Virginia has waived the fingerprint requirement and now you just have to pay the court clerk a filing fee. I need to look into it.

Because look at all the states that offer reciprocity with Utah. If you have their non-resident permit, you can carry in all of those states.
It makes travel easier.

Edit:
FishingPilot beat me to it by 1 minute. ;)

I mailed in my renewal last week. My current permit doesn't expire for four more months. Should be interesting to see how long it takes.
