To grind or remove IL flag

here you go

Thats how the scratches look on mine got a pretty good one down the side plate but no biggie I'm sure it will acquire more with time. And if it gets bad enough ill send it in.

Several years ago, I had this discussion with an S&W Performance Center person, who asked that I not use his name, for obvious reasons.

Official answer: Do not remove the internal lock. . . ever.

Unofficial answer: If you are going to remove ANY of it, remove ALL of it, as it is possible for some of the small remaining parts after removal of the flag, in certain circumstances, to fall out of their places back into the action, thereby locking up the gun.

If it's a target gun just leave it the way it is, if your going to CCW with it remove the lock and plug the hole.

I would remove all lock components and keep them in case of a trip to the factory and Plug.

It's just a real eyesore, otherwise.

this will be a ccw gun. Do you guys know if the gentleman on the forum who makes the plugs still currently making them? I noticed the thread he started was dated years ago.

well thats good to hear i should be placing an order soon.

would this gap cause an issue with anything getting in there? I haven't thought of this since all my j frames have been hammerless. This is why i was thinking of shaving the nub off the flag but then if i needed to send it in for warranty work id be screwed.

YES, YOU WOULD BE SCREWED. IF YOU DISABLE OR REMOVE THE IL, YOU VOID YOUR WARRANTY. IF YOU SEND THE GUN IN FOR A FACTORY REPAIR, YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR SHIPPING BOTH WAYS, THE COST OF INSTALLING A NEW IL, AND THE COST OF THE REPAIR THAT YOU SENT IT IN FOR. I LEARNED THIS THE HARD WAY, WITH A 617. I WOULD REMOVE THE LOCK AND SAVE IT. IF AND WHEN YOU NEED TO SEND THE GUN IN FOR REPAIRS, YOU CAN RE-INSTALL THE IL, AND AVOID MUCH GRIEF…….

will do. I think this will suit me well as a edc gun I haven't taken the darn thing off since i got it i love it so much. Maybe too much haha

This my or may not be true. I called S&W CS they said that each gun is evaluated on an individual basis. Theoretically just changing a spring would also void the warranty. They said if a gun comes in and has not been "butchered" and didn't have the IL it would still be covered under the warranty.

It could all depend on how they feel that day or who you deal with, If there swamped with work and everything else i suppose.

THEY DEFINITELY ARE NOT GOING TO SHIP A GUN BACK, W/O REPLACING THE IL THAT YOU REMOVED. THEY PUT THE IL THERE TO RENDER THE GUN CHILDPROOF, ETC. IF A KID GETS A HOLD OF YOUR LOADED GUN (GOD FORBID) WITH A MISSING LOCK, THAT S&W DID NOT REPLACE, AND SHOOTS HIS FRIEND, BOTH YOU AND S&W WILL BE SUED FOR MILLIONS. NEITHER OF YOU WILL BE IN A DEFENSIBLE POSITION. THEY ARE NOT GOING TO ASSUME THAT LIABILITY, NO MATTER WHO YOU TALK TO, HOW SWAMPED THEY ARE, OR HOW THEY FEEL THAT DAY………….

LOL! None of this is true but it's a nice rant.

Some points made could be true but my observation and i have worked with s&w in the past is some people want to make your day and others just want you off the phone. There have been times where i needed a part one fellow shipped one to me no questions asked and was awesome. Happened again and another guy gave me a shipping label and said id have to send it in.It was for a different fire arm so it wasn't because they noticed a pattern.
Just my observations.

GASPIPES, I HAVE A NICE PIECE OF SWAMPLAND I WANT TO SELL YOU IN FLORIDA. YOU MUST BELIEVE IN SANTA, AND THE TOOTH FAIRY……….
