To wait or not for new M&P 9mm purchase?

I've been looking into adding an M&P 9mm to my collection. However, due to the current ammo shortage situation, will it be wise to wait until things settle down a bit? Nothing more frustrating than having a new handgun, but can't find any decent ammo to shoot with it.

Wait! It's worth the wait and you will love it.....if you get one that is. Love my M&P9 Pro and 9c!

Got a new wallet for Christmas - sure do iike it, although the greenback availability situation is not likely to improve anytime soon.......;)

Well, you could buy the Shield 40 and get the 9mm barrel and magazines. 40S&W is available and has been through previous purchase frenzies, then you can put in the 9mm and shoot cheap when ammo is available.

Who is seriously considering the option.

I suggest getting it, if you can find one in stock somewhere. The gun grabbers are back at it again, and it looks like part of their strategy is to deplete ammo inventories with massive purchases. This may be a precursor to controls on private ammo purchases, besides trying to grandfather (and eventually confiscate) all semi auto weapons. We all need to bombard our Congressmen and Senators with our objections to ANY 2nd Amendment limitations.

I would buy the gun you want and worry about cartridges later. If 9mm is really what you are after, skip the investment in .40SW gun and 9mm conversion parts. Buy the gun you really want now - while you can. Sooner or later the ammunition situation will calm down.

If you live where you are stuck with 10-rd magazines, then that might change things a bit and there may be no advantage to buying gun and magazines now.

Where are these ammo shortages? I know NJ is not a great example but I can buy anything I like and plenty of it, 9mm, .38, .357 .22 and even .25 with one exception, .32 S&W long is a PITA to find but that's normal.

No shortages of 9mm here and prices are normal too. But, try finding 223 or 5.56...

My local Palmetto Armory didn't have near the 9mm selection they usually do, but still had a lot of Blazer, as well as high end SD cartridges. No .22 bulk, though. What with the new year, and pending/possible AWB, everybody is buying everything in sight. It will just take a little while to get new shipments in, so if I were you, I'd buy the 9 when you can, and then get ammo when you can, resorting to the Net if necessary, which often has better prices anyhow.

Believe me, you will NOT be happier a month from now if you can find all the 9mm ammo you want, but can no longer find your M&P.

No. It would NOT be wise to wait. It is a snooze you loose event right now. GET IT NOW before prices climb OR you can't find one. Then you'll have ammo and NO 9.

NONE of my 9's are picky ammo eaters,so don't worry about decent ammo to shot. Just GET THE 9 WHILE YOU STILL CAN !!!

Forget "Chicken Little",the sky is not falling. It's just a stampede do to what has been going on and everyone is panic buying AGAIN. All that's doing is driving prices up.

This is pretty true here as well. However, the prices have gone up over night and the cheap stuff is not available. If you don't mind paying $16+/50 rounds there is plenty to be had. But it's hard to find any below $13/50 like you could a few weeks ago.
As to the OP, I wouldn't wait, as long as you're sure it's what you want.

Buy buy buy buy. Anything you thought you wanted you should get. The buying frenzy has manufacturers back ordered on everything for a while. That coupled with our political situation and our world changing.... Plus prices won't be going down and you may not be able to buy later if they do something stupid....

I wouldn't let the shortages hold you up from buying what you want. I honestly don't think people will be out of ammo for very long. Actually both of my local walmarts have plenty of .223 left on the shelf at $6-10 per 20pc.

Do you have any interest in reloading? Now might be the time to look more into it so future shortages do not effect you as much.

I would definitely buy one. It will be easier for the govt to prevent people from buying these guns in the future than it will be for them to confiscate them

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! The M&P 9mm is the one I want. I've had a chance to rent and shoot one recently; the ergonomics of the M&P 9 felt comfortable in my hands. Also, 9mm ammo is still relatively inexpensive compared to the other calibers. It will be mainly for range use anyways. Now to see if I can find a new one at a decent price.

... or more specifically "Now to see if I can find a new one". Not sure about the "decent price". Prices are definitely going up on guns and ammo and both are getting harder to find. I'm still finding some 9mm ammo but it looks like prices have increased. A friend of mine purchased the M&P 9mm couple of months ago and loves it. Great gun. Good luck.

M&P 9

Hey guys, I'm a noobe here and have had an M&P9 with a thumb safety on order for over 2 weeks now. The LGS did get in one without a safety, but I just feel better with one. Hopefully I won't have to wait too long, with the current rumblings in the Whitehouse & the Illinois Statehouse. I think my LGS is pretty well sold out of everything here in S. Illinois. Does anyone know if S&W is shipping regularly now? I had heard that they were shut down for the holidays. Hopefully they are working overtime now to meet the demand. I was even thinking I would consider an SR9, but LGS has none of those either. There is still 9mm ammo available around here though.
