Today in 1965 the first combat troops landed in Viet Nam when 3500 Marines arrived to defend Danang.

Hard to believe that was well over 50 years ago. To the tens of thousands of warriors who gave their lives ... Semper Fi
I had a Special Forces friend there in 1963, he sure thought he was in combat! The Vietnam wall has 22 friends he lost in just 2 "engagements".

It was down in Bama-
Was taking a leak during Happy Hour at the O Club.
The Senior Marine assigned to the staff there moves into the next one.
I look over and say, I see some of your Troops have gone ashore in Vietnam.
He replied, Yeah and I’m down here baby sitting you Flyboys.
It’ll all be over before I can get over there!
Little did we know!

Seems so long ago. I was a junior in high school. The next year, after graduation, all we could think about was getting drafted. It was a lottery based on birth date and age IIRC. Had a college deferment for a couple of years, then ended up enlisting in the TxARNG. That lasted 30 years.

I was doing a West-PAC on the Capitaine most of 1965.
Most ports we hit there was a lot of military presence. Spent a bit of time in the South China Sea. Was an exciting time for a 19 year old.
We did get to spend Christmas in Brisbane before we headed home.

Hubby's Uncle Mike was a Marine ("A" CO 2D AT BN 2D MARDIV) on Okinawa in 1963 when they sent him to Vietnam. Don't know what he was doing there as he didn't make it back home alive.
I had an uncle in the Marines, he was so important to my formative years!

Can anyone recommend a good overview book on US involvement Viet Nam?
On this day in 1965 I wasn't even born and I wasn't 10 years old when the US left Vietnam. I certainly wasn't old enough to understand what was going on then. And I really haven't found a good objective book that explains what was going on.
