Lots of medical posts, comes with age group I guess, so my mind wandered?

When did you have your tonsils (possibly adenoids also) removed?
Me, I was 23y.o., and wish I had them removed as a child!
My Dad had his removed during WWII, while in the Navy, before going to the Aleutions, for the duration. One of three sailors that had surgery the same day, and two survived. All three rushed back to the base hospital, as something untoward was given during anthesia! Probably why my parents were reluctant for me to have mine removed as a child despite many bouts with tonsilitis (sp).

10yrs old..1968. Travis A.F.B. I was an air force brat. Managed to stay out of hospitals for 50 years after that, but had to have a TURP done 52 days ago.(healing well) Hoping to never go back in. A necessary evil of life...

TONSILLS

DAD had his removed in a field hospital in Africa during WWll, he was more afraid of Patton slapping him than the ribbing he got from the more serious wounded. I had mine removed at 33 y/o. Don't ever have surgery where you work, ;) I woke up in labor & delivery with balloons & flowers.

I had mine removed at 5 or 6 after being sick off an on for about a year. Instead of ice cream the hospital turned me on to sherbert. Yummy.

The first meal I wanted was a hotdog. I like mine burnt. I ate it like I hadn't had a meal in a week. Dang the sore throat.

BTW, You can still get tonsillitis WO tonsils.

I was 12. Made the mistake the next morning of asking for orange juice for breakfast. I think they gave me hydrochloric acid in error.

53 and I've still got my tonsils, but, I had a sore throat for a few days, not sore like "scratchy" but sore like a knot on either side of my throat. This thread has got me wondering hmmm, tonsilitis?

I was 9 and I was so ill from the ether I kept heving. copiuos amount of popsicles and they sent me home the next day. Still sick from what I thought was the ether but infact I was still bleeding and swallowng the blood. Doctor came to the house and used tongs to jam wads of cotton down my throat to exspell all the blood. I was tramatized for years after that.....LOL Im ok now!

1970 in Wichita KS, I was 4. I dont remember too much about the ice cream, but the nurses had a hard time keeping me in my room. I wanted to explore!

HOW TO TELL YOUR TONSILLS ARE BAD.

I never had any previous problems. Following a sore throat I bought an icee frozen drink from 7-11, a piece of ice got into a hole in the bad tonsil , you will know right then that they need to go. They looked grey like a couple of raw oysters left out in the sun too long, & could see little pockets in them. They had become "cryptic"??? & I could have removed them myself with a grapefruit spoon, but I would not recommend that. App 4 hours after my surgery I got a pat on the tush & sent home with pain pills I could not swallow. Ice packs to the throat 24-7 for several days, sleeping upright on a couch, holding crushed ice in my mouth until melted then spitting out the water until I could swallow maybe 3-4 days later. By that time I could open my mouth enough to look inside & that was the scary part, My uvula was the size of my thumb & looked like another (smaller version) man part. It looked like they were removed with a blow torch. If you need yours out I would STRONGLY recommend staying AT LEAST overnight in the hospital for IV hydration & injectable pain meds. For some lucky people it is much less of a big deal.

Can tonsils just rot away?

I used to get mine infected, when I was younger... they would get this white stuff in them??? I know it sounds like a tall tale, but I would use a table knife and reach back in my throat and scrape that while stuff away...It was sort of like dried pus???? I did that for a couple of years, after a while no more white stuff on the back of my throat.

I know I never had to have them taken out so I don't know if they just rotted away, or it was something else..

1968, I was 7 years old. That was when I learned not to trust the medical community. They conned me with the old all the jello and ice cream you can eat. Well, after the ether and vomiting up the copius amounts of blood swallowed during the suregery, I wasn't in the mood for ice cream or jello. I remember the first solid food I ate was a hamburger about a week later. Went down tough, but man was that cheese burger good. Medicine has come a long way in terms of patient comfort...….

Probably at 5-6.Really didn't want to go.Id been in there for about a week a year earlier with a bout of measles that got out of hand.Thats still burnt into my memory lol
Damn nurse was sticking a needle in my rump every time I turned around!!

i was about 9 ...and can still remember them dropping the ether onto the gauze mask, while i tried to catch my breath....scary stuff for a young kid....

Mine flared up during ITR in the Marines.
Morning formation and Sgt said "sick, lame, lazy and crazy fall out for sick call".
Got to the Navy aid station, a Quonset hut, and Corpsman gives me the once over.
Corpsman gets the doctor and he spent about a minute looking down my throat.
He tells the Corpsman nothing he can do, that this Marine Pvt needs a Pediatrician.
I hump back to the area, thinking I'm going to die, a Pediatrician?? must be serious. I'm 17.
Told the 1st Sgt what the doc said and gave him the papers, he said to saddle up (M-16 field marching pack and helmet) and double time it to catch up to the company.
This is the day we humped Mt Mothertucker.

Still have my 66 YO tonsils, and the sweet memories of Mt Mothertucker.

...age 9 in 1962...our family doctor was a nice guy but not much of a doctor...other doctors have looked in there and asked what the hell happened back there?...still vividly remember the ether mask...using starting fluid to start diesel engines always brought that memory back...

...that was the same year that I ran through a field of stinging nettles in Nebraska...I got so sick that I came down with pneumonia...

...'62 was kind of a rough year for 9 year old me...

Age 6. I still remember the ether and the pain when I came out from under the anesthesia. But, I also remember the unlimited amount of ice cream I was permitted while my throat healed up. :D

I was also 6 when I had mine removed, I'll never forget the ether, but don't remember much pain. Had mine removed in the morning and was home that day.

Was promised laying around eating mass ice cream, and watching TV. Kennedy happened to get shot that day, so every channel...all 3 of them was Kennedy stuff non stop. Not much fun for a 6 year old.

Seemed like almost everyone in my elementary school in the ‘50’s had their tonsils removed.

Most of them brought the tonsils in for ‘show and tell’: looked like smoked oysters floating in a pill bottle full of formaldehyde.

Smelled terrible when one kid uncapped the container and somehow spilled the contents. Don’t know how that could have happened: we were just passing it around the class so everyone got a good look. I think the kid who had it before me loosened the cap to play a trick on me.

I must be the only person in my class who still has tonsils.
