For part of his 13th birthday present, I took my nephew shooting for the day.

We stopped for pizza on the way to the range:

We drove my Mustang convertible because it was a such a great day:

His dad had bought him a Ruger 10/22 a couple years ago and I gave him a red dot sight for it awhile back. We sighted it in and he had fun shooting his Ruger with it. When I told him we would go shooting as part of his birthday present, I loved it when he asked, "Can I bring MY gun?" Of course!

Then he fired my Ruger SR22P:

He really liked the Ruger .22 pistol!

He'd never fired a .45 before so I had him try my Dan Wesson CBob and he loved it. He had no problem with the recoil either.

Then we moved down to the 100 yard line and gave my Savage 114 Classic .30-06 a try. His first shot hit the X smack dab in the middle. His second shot was a little high but he admitted he flinched it. After two shots he was done with the .30-06. He had wanted to shoot a "scoped" rifle for the first time. He just wasn't expecting the recoil to be so much.

Then we hopped over to the trap range. He had never fired a shotgun before and I figured his great grandfather's 1955 Browning Double Automatic would be a great start:

He hit 11 out of 25 clays his first time out!!! Most of them were toward the end of his run so he was hitting them pretty consistently. Ahhh, youth, quality vision, and fast hand/eye coordination!

We had a great day together!

He had a smile on his face the whole ride home in the convertible.

I talked to my sister and her husband afterwards and they said he hadn't stopped talking about his day with his uncle. He was showing the pictures and videos to everyone that would listen. His older cousins were impressed and a little bit jealous, which he really enjoyed!

Here's a video of him shooting the SR22P (just click on the photo to make it play):

Pizza, guns and a Mustang convertible - Sounds like THEE perfect 13th birthday!
I'm bettin' you're his favorite uncle :)

Sounds like it was a great day for the both of you,
thanks for taking the time to share it with us......:)

I love to read stories like this since it demonstrates that some of
the younger generation will be there to take our places one day. ;)

Nice pic's too.....:):)

I can't think of a better way to spend a day with a youngster, especially if they don't get that kind of experience very often. My son only goes to the range with me a couple times a year, because he's SO busy......right. But he's shot a few dozen guns more than I have, because all my shooting buddies love handing him something he's never shot before. His college buddies sit in awe when he starts listing all the stuff he's shot, all the guns and calibers. He's been shooting since he was four, and he's still not as good as he thinks he is, but he's a decent pistolero, and a passable rifle shot.

I still think every kid should have a 22 rifle, and a 20-acre woods nearby to shoot it in.......my theory is that video game usage would drop by half!

mm6mm6, thanks for posting the great pictures......you are back to "favorite Uncle" status!

Can I get an AMEN!!

I grew up in a moderately rural neighborhood about halfway between Baltimore and Annapolis, Maryland with two younger brothers.

When I tell people today that, from about the time we were 11 or 12, we would come home from school and grab a rifle or shotgun and roam around the woods and fields near the house until dinner time, and not one of the neighbors so much as batted an eye, they think I'm nuts!

Imagine three teenage boys walking around their suburban neighborhood with loaded rifles today!

We didn't realize how lucky we were; but I sure do now.

You did a really good thing. Some of my best remembrances are of teaching my four girls to shoot. They still love to go with me, but they are all grownup now and two of them have families of their own, so we don't go as much as I would like.
BUT, now I am teaching my grandkids. It's great.
