top break spring (trigger return)

Can anyone describe or show a drawing of how to position the 1st model 2 issue top break trigger spring ?have tried and it does not completely return the trigger to the forward position
mods- if this is in the wrong place please move it

Oh, you mean a 38 Single Action, 1st Model. I do have a schematic for the 1st Model below. The spring on both 1st and 2nd Models are the same and I have had a 2nd apart before. I recall that there was a slot in the trigger and one needs to make sure that the short leg of the spring is pushed fully into the slot when reinstalled. Other than that, the hammer spring has a pretty simple task of pushing the trigger forward after the hammer falls.

Replace it.

Odds are your spring is weak or cracked. Those V' springs are not a strong spring and they were later replaced with the coil type springs. So were the straight type main springs.

Every time I find a V' spring damaged or weak? I simply replace it with a small coil type spring. They will literally never break. They can't be seen from the outside so it doesn't matter that it's not an original spring. What matters is that it will never break again and the action functions flawlessly.

I've made several similar V springs by cutting a piece off one of those black spring binder clips from the office supply store. There are several different sizes and thickness. I carefully cut the shape I need with a Dremel cutoff wheel. Sometimes it takes a few tries to get it right, but you can cut many springs from a single ten cent clip.

Sorry it is a double action top break not a single action .and it is a V spring

OK, I also have a schematic for a 38 Double Action as well, but the trigger spring is totally different design and function. For me, it is one of the toughest springs to get and keep in place when installing the trigger guard. It often shifts a little and does not work unless it sets just right. I think I have tried to get that spring in place on one gun a dozen times before it caught the trigger and functioned properly. I would keep trying and bet it will just drop into place sooner or later.

If I remember correctly, there is one leg of the spring with a bigger bend than the other and that always went down against the trigger guard.

Hi all, old thread but I have the same problem with a third model top break. I have tried over 20 times and the spring just wont function. Does anyone have a suggestion. They say the long leg rests on the ledge and the bottom leg fits in the trigger guide groove. It just does not function. Does the spring rest over the bolt pin or does it butt against the back of the groove. I just got the spring from Jack first and it looked right. Im stumped.

If all else fails, fashion a small piece of wood to fill the gap in front of the spring in the trigger guard slot, restricting the forward travel when the trigger guard is installed. Push in the front tab first and them compress and snap in the rear of the guard. I have one 32 that I had to use a wood plug to get it back in working order. The wood will not affect the operation of the gun.

Just a followup for everyone having trigger spring problems. I tried everything at first. Jack, Numrich, made my own from a paper clip and tried at lease 20 times to insert correctly. I finally discovered that the length of the spring is the critical factor. I bought a bunch of old parts that included an original trigger spring. Dropped it in and it butted against the back of the slot so that it could not slip in the track. Popped it in and it worked first time. It was a little weak, but that is another isse.

I am working on getting my .32 TB, Double Action into working order and I wish that I could find a Youtube video on taking these apart and putting them back together again. Or some assembly drawings of some sort would be nice.

Hi all;I just got my trigger spring to work by using a longer version that would not slip off the ledge because it butted against the housing. So being a real perfectionist, I wnted more "spring". So I tried to open it a bit and .....ooops....I split it. So I didnt have one of the longer springs so I went back to the old smaller one which would slip off the ledge. I tried a different approch. I took one half the broken spring and laid it in the groove on the trigger guard, fat side to the front of the gun. This took up some of the space in the housing preventig the spring from slipping. This worked well. Still a little sticky at the end of travel but overall good.

There were three different styles of trigger spring used on the Model 1, 2nd Issue. What is the serial number of the gun? Based on that I can estimate which trigger spring was used.

The best fix for Model 3 trigger spring

So after experimenting for days, I tried to go to Jack first and take a gamble on a trigger spring that did not appear to actually be for the gun as mine had a hammer. I ordered their - S&W Safety Hammerless .38 trigger spring #271-30.1. Well it arrived very quickly (like Jack always does) and I dropped it in. It was longer than the others. Behold....it worked perfectly even taking up the last bit of slack in the trigger return. This specific spring is the answer and it was by far the best solution. So thanx for all the help and I hope this gives everyone the missing solution. It has to be that specific spring for this gun. No others will work.
