Corn tortillas are made from lard and masa - not corn meal. Masa is like mashed hominy. You can buy instant masa mix at most grocery stores (in Texas).

I grew up in Texas, in high school we would do lunch at a Mexican restaurant and order beans, rice and tortillas, delicious and cheap.
