tough choice

I am thinking about selling or trading my M&P 9c with laser for another Revolver in 38 / 357 cal. I have a 4 inch 19-3 I bought new in the mid 70's I like the 686 or 686+ in 6 inch BBL, what else is out there and would be a close +or- a few dollars in trade or cash value?
Oh just S&W or maybe Ruger please

I read "everywhere" that if you're going to have just one gun - get a 357 revolver - and if you're going to get a revolver get a S&W
I went with logic and bought a 686 ss 6in new about 1 1/2 years ago
semi-auto's are cool and there are plenty of really cool guns out there - I gotten a few gems since the 686, but surprisingly its my favorite gun.
Do you reload? if not, its a great time to start and the 686 (357 in general) is a real good one to start with

Not to belittle your M&P, but considering how much nice revolvers are going for (I sold a 686-3 a month ago for $760), you may have to come up with a fair amount of cash to change from pistol to revolver. Since you're not averse to Ruger, that's the route I would suggest. Maybe a GP100?

Now if you want to spend the money, get a 686. They are wonderful.

I do reload, 45acp, 38-357, 9mm and 30-30
Since I bought an sr 1911 and a cw45 for edc I no longer shoot the 9mm as much as I should. and love the idea of another wheel gun and not having to pick up all the brass from all over the place lol

No offense taken, that's why I am asking. My M&P came with the CTC factory S&S laser grip so it should fetch more then the standard 9c.
I also have two extra 17rd mags with x-tender grips and a horse hyde kydex IWB holster.
My son in law picked up a LNIB 686 + 4 in bbl for 600 last Sept. and a neighbor just bought a beautiful and tight 6 shot 6in bbl from the LGS that was consigned from an estate sale for $650 last month.
They both shoot like a dream. I am not looking for an older 686 just a good shooter
That's why I am thinking I may be in the ballpark on value but time will tell.

That's easy then. Get a 686. You'll be glad you did. Personally, I would go with the pre-lock model, because I think their trigger pulls back then were smoother and silkier than the newer ones with the built-in lock on the hammer. It could be just my perception, though.

You are right in that your pistol should bring more than another one not similarly equipped -- unfortunately, you shouldn't count on it. Most add-ons, even nice ones, don't add much if anything to resale value in the wider market. Still, you might find an individual willing to pay you a bit of a premium.

The CTC laser grips were not an Add-on at lease not by me they came from the factory as part of the gun,
Mdl number 220074 check it out they have the M&P logo on them.
But I understand your point about adding value. I could always sell the laser grip separately I guess if it came to that. or just keep the 9 and buy a 686 lol

Well I did ok with the deal.
I sold the 9c and two 17 rd mags with x grips for $600 and then sold the laser grip for $145 I basically recouped my money minus sales tax. But the great part is I was able to buy a nice tight 28-2 highway patrolman 6 inch bbl in good shape for $650 out the door I ended up with the mdl. 28 and $95 left for ammo if I can find 38 and 357 lol
While at the LGS I spotted a new XDS 45, I had my cw45 on my hip and asked about a trade. I got $300 for the CW and added $225 cash for the XDS So I got that for $525 out the door.
All in all I'd say I had a pretty good gun day

Now, buy some N Frame wood Target Grips for showing off that Model 28 !! The Hogue Grip makes it a nice shooter but the wood grips make it beautiful !

I am looking for a nice set of wood grips as we speak. The XDS is a nice small reliable 45cal SD/HD gun and will be my EDC after I get a few rounds thru it.
I just happen to fall into the 28 asked about a 686 and thy had none looked at a few other stainless pistols and decided I am old school all the way and really wanted a blued gun saw the 28 and didn't even know what it was past being an S&W held it it felt right and home it came.

S&W 686 - Very high demand & High quality & Very Expensive Should be good to go

S&W 66 - Almost as high a demand & High quality & Almost as expensive Should be good to go

Ruger Security Six - Only Moderate to low demand & Equally High quality to above & relatively inexpensive. Can be found with decent triggers or can do or have done a trigger job if needed.

My choice is the security six. I have three of them: one is 2 ¾”, one is 4”, and one in 6”. All three came with very good triggers, excellent accuracy, and were in great condition for a lot less than either of the above S&W. Buy the Ruger and you can afford ammo to shoot in it if money is tight.

That said you cannot go wrong with any of them and I have or did have all of the above. I have sold the M66 4” and the M686 in 6”, but still have a M686-4 in 4inch.

You did very well all around.

The 28-2 is a Great Revolver. Every 28 I have owned has been a tack driver. Since you were looking at a 6" barrel revolver from the start, I think you will really love the 28 even more than a 686.

The XDS is another Great concealed carry semi auto. Every thing I have seen and read about the XDS has been good.

I wonder if anything will compare to your 19-3. I have one, nickel, 4-inch barrel and I bought mine in the mid-80's and it is still the gun I go for when I hear a bump in the night. Years ago I read in a magazine that some experts were polled and named the 19 as the best all around gun you could own, and I don't disagree. My second to favorite gun is also a S&W, a model 617, 10 round. It is my favorite range gun, and if I ever had to limit myself to a single handgun for survival in the wilderness, it would be this 617. You almost can't go wrong with any S&W revolver.

I agree 100% about the 19-3 It is a fine pistol.
and the first gun I ever bought way back in 1974. She still looks brand new and I shoot it a lot It always draws comments and questions from the folks shooting alongside me at the range. I hope I enjoy the Mdl 28 nearly as much.

Good choice! I really like the N frames, and 357 magnums feel pretty gentle in the large frame revolvers. If you get a hankering later, there is also the 627 which is a stainless steel, N frame that can be found in an eight shot version. It is 33% more fun than the six shot versions. Happy shooting!
