I came across two .44 Magnums recently. One is a Smith 29 Mountain Gun, with the lock but like new. The other is a Model 29 Classic 4-inch barrel, also with the lock. The price is the same on both. And I can't afford both.

The classic has the heavier barrel, right? This may come down to a question of weight -- both physical and visual. I'm kind of recoil sensitive, so I'd go with the extra few ounces. But I must admit the contours of the Mountain Gun barrel are more attractive than the Big Chunk o' Metal on the alternative.

I don't think you can go wrong either way: it's really a matter of personal preference and which one has the slightly greater appeal for you.

Buy the one that "calls" you. Personaly, I am into light weight and portability. Mountain gun.

Does the vendor have lay-a-way?

I had a 629 Classic with a 6" barrel that I really liked untill I found some one who liked it a lot better.

I would get the Mountain Gun.
