I would like to know if anyone has had a Toyota Tacoma that has
been bought back by Toyota due to frame rust and your experience
with that. My 96 Tacoma failed the frame inspection and Toyota was
very generous in their offer to buy it back from me. They gave me a
loaner for 30 days to drive until I decide what I wanted to do. I told
them they could have my truck for the price they quoted me. I was told
the process should take around 3-4 weeks to complete. I have not
heard from Toyota about this matter yet(6 wks.) I called customer
service and a case manager will take it over tomorrow and I should
hear something very soon. I have bought a new truck in the meantime
and need to close the deal on the old one to put toward my loan.
Wondering if the dealership screwed up paperwork or something to
allow this thing to drag on for such a long time??

Toyota bought my 96 Tacoma back in the summer of 09 at, as you say, a very fair price. I honestly don't remember how long it took. I actually dragged my feet as I wanted to buy another truck before Toyota bought my truck back so I could park them side by side in the garage and strip the accessories and anything else I wanted from the 96 for the 03 I bought. They will come through for you though and it is a great deal.

my father in law had to have his bought back, didnt seem like the process took long at all IIRC. Seems like he took it down there, they looked at it and the next week they bought it back.

+1 on stripping the accessories if any. Buddy of mine bought 1 think 2 years ago, and said there was a car hauler loaded with trucks bought back from Toyota due to the frame issue. Said the trucks had caps, running boards etc. He asked salesman about the accessories, and was told they couldn't be touched-everything was going back.

Before I purchased my 2004 Pre-Runner, I looked into this issue. It appears that those of us live and operate in the Sunny South (a.k.a. no road salt for months on end) should not be worried about the recall. I also think that by the 2004 model year, Toyota had "taken care" of the issue.

My 2001 Tacoma failed inspection in 2008. Took it to the local Toyota dealer that day. They loaned me a brand new Camry on the spot and took about ten days to replace the frame (and new springs, shackles, gas lines, brake lines, etc.). It's still out in my driveway right now and I expect to add another 40 or 50 thousand miles to its current 125 thousand.

Sounds like the dealer did not get everything processed correctly on his end. We have had about a dozen tacomas bought back all took no more than 4 weeks except 1 and that truck had ownership questions but was resolved in about 7 weeks. As a dealer speaking if the documentation is correct & the back log is not too great I have seen it take less than 2 weeks. Call the service manager or customer relations manager & discuss with them also call Toyota customer service & discuss with them. Once the inspection is done & all documentation is forwarded to Toyota A company called ISG (independent Service Group) handles the actual transaction. They will write the check on Toyota's behalf. Dont know if this helps or not, but hang in there they will come through for you.

Thanks for the help everyone! I'm sure it will happen, but thought
6 weeks was long enough time for them to process the paperwork.
May contact the dealer again tomorrow and see where we are on
this thing.
