Trade my 19?

Since the 19 is no longer made I would hang on to it. If you can afford it why not just buy the 686 out right? That way you will 2 of the best magnums made by S&W.

Sounds like a good deal if you want a bit heavier gun and want to shoot lots of Magnum loads. Both of good guns, so it's just a question of which will suit your needs or wants better.
Once I traded a 4" 19-3 for a 4" 65 simply because I like stainless guns and fixed sights -- by normal logic that trade would have been insane, but in terms of filling a niche in my accumulation, the 65 made more sense. No regrets.

I would keep the 19-2, I view bluing wear as a badge of honor on shooters. A 686 is a good thing to have but I would not make that trade.

Only if you shoot mostly heavy magnum loads, if it's a plinker that just sees magnums once in a while, keep the 19.

How many nights will it keep you awake knowing that you had a 4” Model 19 and let it get away? One of the finest revolvers ever made. As you said, with that “ever so sweet trigger.”
Hold on to it. Buy the 686 if you have to have it but nothing shoots or carries like a 4” Model 19. Not even the nicest Model 66.

I would make the trade. Even though it never happened to me, each time I shot my 19 I was worried about the forcing cone cracking. With my 686, I never had a concern. So for me, I like my 686 and my N frames for shooting 357s.

The answer is right in front of your face, keep the Combat Magnum, which is no longer in production and buy a 686 which still is. See that wasn't so bad was it?

I wouldn't trade. Keep the 19 and just buy a 686 as they're all over the place.

I have both, the 686 is a tad heavier, which has plusses and minuses. I kind of prefer the trigger and action on the older K frames but it's a very slight difference, not enough to make me lean one way or another.
I also prefer stainless guns in general, but like a lot of people here, I have the sickness so have 19's and 66's, 686's and soon to have a 586... but that's a different story altogether.
As far as rareness, believe it or not 686's are rarer here used than 19's and 66's. They mad a huge number of 19's, they really arent THAT rare. Findin one mint with a box is another story, but for a shooter, you can readily find them.

I would keep the 19 and save money until I could afford the 686. Trading guns is never a good deal unless you don't want the one your getting rid of. If you sell the 19 you may get more selling on the classifieds than trading to a dealer.
Keep the 19. If you trade it, in six months your life will be one vast surging regret, and full of what has been lost. A 19 is no longer made and has a certain panache of what was once the epitome of what a revolver could and should be in terms of personal protection. I sold my four inch 19 when I was getting married, my dad had passed and I was sure of everything. Four decades later I am still searching for a four inch to plug a hole. Wear marks? Be serious. Those are grey hairs. Character lines and experience trails. Just my two cents.

If you trade it in to a gunshop you will end up short I promise you. Sell it outright and buy what you want.
I'm casting my vote with the crowd that suggests you keep the 19 and buy the 686 when the finances allow! I have both and they fill slightly different roles in my collection. The 19 is a distinct piece of S&W history. Owning a Combat Magnum is a must have in any true S&W revolver collector's collection. The 686 is a true .357 Magnum "shooting machine"! I have a NIB 4" 686 no dash that is my "Safe Queen", but I also a 4" 686 no dash "Shooter".

I also suggest keeping the 19.These guns are timeless classics and honest wear makes them better to me.
I loved an L frame(586) for duty and lots of heavy shooting,but to me it would not be worth a trade of a 19 for one.

Keep your Model 19 and find an older 686.

I'd sooner destroy my dominant hand with a tack hammer than trade away the Combat Magnum for something else.
