Hello I have a mint 16-4 with the box, and I have someone that wants to trade me a 27-2 4in barrel that is also mint condition. His 27-2 does not have a box. I just wanted to hear some feedback on wether or not it is a fair trade. Thanks in advance.

Looking at current auction sites, the Model 16 in the box seems to be priced considerably more than a Model 27 in similar condition without a box. One site currently has two Model 16's, like new in box, for $2195 and $2695. The Model 27's in excellent shape with no box are running around an average of $1500.00, give or take a few hundred. Just depends on how bad you want a Model 27. Personally, I would keep the Model 16, unless I got the Model 27 and $500.00. Good luck.
I would need closer to a $700 cash throw in to trade.
It boils down to what suits your fancy the most.
The 32 Magnum is a niche cartridge like the 41 Magnum is. Those of us that know about the 32’s love them. Choices for factory ammunition before the panic was limited mainly to Federal and Hornady which makes it a good choice for reloaders.
Ammunition choices and availability for the Model 27 needs no explanation. Even now it is easier to find 38 and 357 ammunition than the 32 Magnum.
As much as I am a fan of the 32 Magnum the Model 16 doesn’t trip my interest. I view the cartridge more suitable for self-defense in small frame guns rather than a range gun like the S&W.
Why is the box important to you? If you are a collector then I can understand your hesitation.

Keep the 16-4. Grub up some cash and buy a 27 if you really want one. I am not surprised your friend wants to trade.
Around here I would ask $1000 difference. 27's are easy to find and won't appreciate much. The model 16 with the box and goodies are scarce and will go nowhere but up,up,up. I think if You make the trade You will regret it.

I appreciate everyone’s take. The only reason I thought about it is because it’s the 4 in. And I have every other barrel length of the 27.
A four inch 27-2 in mint condition is not easy to find. When was the last time you saw one for sale and how much was it? Yes, lots of 27-2s for sale, how many are 4 inch? A year or two ago I traded an S sn 3.5 inch 27-2 for a 4 inch 16-4 to a member here. I'm still happy with that trade and I believe the recipient of the 27-2 is as well. I don't think there is much difference in value between the two guns. Good luck.

A 27-2 with a 4" barrel is not that common, but even if you're trading based on the barrel length, you'll come out on the short end, unless you receive a lot of cash. If you're just looking for a garden variety 27-2, they are everywhere. Model 16's of any iteration are pretty rare. Good luck.
