Transporting your firearm

In reference to transporting ur firearms in ur vehicle to and from the range or to and from the hunting camp.

How many of u actually keep ur magazines unloaded and separated from the firearm? Also, what about ur tube fed rifles. How many of u keep the unloaded while transporting.

I personally keep all of my weapons unloaded while transporting. If my weapon has a magazine, i also keep the magazine separated from the weapon (magazine is also unloaded). My EDC is the only weapon i keep thats loaded at all times.

I have often wondered how many people may do the same as I do. And if u do it just for safety concern, or is it a law in other States.

We have in New Jersey very strict if confusing regulations when transporting firearms.However a loaded magazine as long as it is not in the firearm is perfectly legal.
I transport all my mags fully loaded as I don't want to waste expensive range time reloading.

Well I have a permit and don't care- however, traveling with a loaded shotgun or rifle I never considered the best practice under normal conditions. I always have unloaded those weapons. My sidearm stays loaded, or locked away (read vault) which I will not open if I am in Demo- territory. I don't go to WASH DC, but if I did, I would just leave it home.

I don't have to worry about that in Mississippi. If I'm in another state chances are nobody will find it unless they look real hard. I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by six. I'm not going to do anything stupid but I will protect myself and those I love. I try to stay out of unfriendly (blue) states even though I can carry under 218. I don't want the hassle or expense if I have to defend myself.

I keep all guns unloaded during transport except my carry piece - a habit since I took basic hunting safety training. I might have all the mags loaded to save time at the range but they are not inserted into the firearm.

Some states do require that mags be unloaded and/or separate from the firearm. Check and memorize your local laws first!

+1 to Duppie & 427mach1. I do the same. When I travel to Texas to visit my folks I take all my pistols with me, because I don't want to worry about them being stolen while I'm gone. There's not that many, so its no problem. They're in a case in the back of a locked(with camper shell)bed.
Unloaded & with no ammo(other than in my carry gun)in the vehicle.

What used to be Colorado says unloaded for transport and, not where it can be reached while driving. When hunting, there is not a round in the chamber of the rifle. The revolver has all 6 but is in the back seat on the passenger side. Magazines are full but there isn't a chambered round in the M&P and they are removed. In Denver, however, the laws are much stricter but, I'm not sure if Denver is even part of the state anymore.

Here in NY without a CCW, the pistol is locked and in the trunk separate from the ammo. You can keep the ammo in the car but only 7 rounds not a full mag.

handguns require triggerlocks as well as being kept inside a locked container, locked in the trunk of your car or if no trunk then must be kept out of sight .ammo kept separate .
long guns empty and out of sight ammo kept separately.
this is our law .
i wouldnt load a gun unless i was about to shoot it . if i carried for defence that would be different, but my guns are for paper and steel and theyll wait for me to load

Hand gun in the center console loaded and ready, or on my hip.
Rifle/Shotgun behind the seat or in the trunk (depending on vehicle).
Rifles, unloaded but with mags loaded, shotgun with tube loaded, empty chamber.
