Past weekend picked up a 1873 -47/70 trap door that had the stock butchered and had been re blued for $ 50.00. I have wanted a carbine and this looks like a good start . I need to have the barrel cut down and crowned ,the front sight silver soldered back on.The stock needs @ 6" added to the front end to bring it to the correct length for a carbine The help i need is did the original carbines have a ramrod (cleaning )rod hole under the barrel? The new stock extension will be doweled and glued fitted under the barrel band .

No, the carbines didn't have a cleaning rod under the barrel. Only the rifles did.

Keep us posted on how the project is going.

The internet is full of information and pictures about trapdoor carbines which should be helpful in modifying it to approximate original carbine condition. Back in the 1970s I converted a junky M1884 rifle to carbine appearance. It looked pretty good, but it wouldn't fool anyone except the rankest amateur.

I resurrected this rifle that had sat rusting in a barn for 40 years.

I got a stock from Rhinehart-Fajen stocks in MO.. I think they may have been bought out by Wenig

The Buffington "Wind Gauge" rear sight was designed to compensate for horizontal bullet drift, which was noticeable with the heavy .45-70 bullet.

Have a Model 1884 trapdoor and wow is it a hoot to shoot. Good luck with your project.

I have an 1884 Rifle that belonged to my Grandfather.

My Late FIL had an 1884 rifle and a carbine.

They are with my MIL and my wife will not get a sniff of these.

Things you need to make a carbine from a rifle:
1. Saddle ring and bar
2. Carbine rear sight
3. Carbine trigger guard
4. Depending on serial number, a carbine butt plate.

What is the serial number of your rifle?
